Hello
I have spent a very long time on the net trying to find out information on gun laws in the areas where I will be going.
I have a permit from a state that Michigan approves, but I am having a hard time finding the actual laws in Michigan as they pertain to CCW.
Also, I will be visiting several gun shops in Michigan. I understand that I can buy a rifle but not a pistol. (I am in a bordering state)
After leaving Michigan, I will be traveling to Illinois. I know that my CCW is no good there. From what I understand, I should have my pistol in a pistol case with the pistol unloaded. The bullets or magazine can be in the case, but the firearm must be unloaded.
I also read about a card in Illinois to transport a firearm.
Can someone help me out with these issues. I would greatly appreciate it.

As an out of state resident you don't need the FOID card. It only applies to IL residents.
You'll be good as you described.

For what it's worth, this is from the NRA's guide:

ILLINOIS--A nonresident is permitted to transport a firearm provided it is unloaded, enclosed in a case, and not easily accessible. A nonresident may possess a firearm for licensed hunting, or at a Department of Law Enforcement recognized target shooting range or gun show.

The City of Chicago requires all firearms possessed in the city to be registered. Handguns not previously registered in Chicago cannot be registered. Oak Park, Evanston, Morton Grove, Highland Park, Wilmette, and Winnetka prohibit the possession of a handgun. Firearms may be transported under the general rule through Chicago for a lawful recreational firearm-related activity.

Generally, to get the Federal preemption, remember: unloaded, cased, locked in trunk.

But CAUTION--not all states follow federal law. They should, and technically they have to, but they don't. So be careful.

Michigan concealed carry law

Thank you for the replies.
The information was really helpful.
The one thing that I cannot find after going to the Michigan Attorney Generals website, and also the Michigan state police website, is the actual law as to how to carry in Michigan.
I have found retired police, applying for the permit, requirements for the permit, hunting laws, etc. I have found nothing stating the specific concealed carry law.
Thank you

For Michigan to recognize your permit, it has to have been issued by your home state. Michigan recognizes all permits, but is has to be a home state permit, thus someone from IL can't carry in Michigan using a Florida non resident permit. This rule stems from the period before Michigan was shall issue. During that period some MI residents who lived in counties that didn't issue permits would just get Florida permits. The MI AG at the time, Frank Kelly, didn't like guns, and didn't like people carrying guns, so issued a ruling that this was verboten.
