I have a 686-4 2.5” headed my way. Can I replace the cc trigger/hammer with a stainless set? I always thought it odd that S&W did that change, it’s for purely cosmetic reasons on my end. Thanks

There are no stainless steel hammers or triggers for the L or N-frame guns. To my knowledge there have never been any flash-chrome hammers or triggers either.

I have not seen any Stainless hammers and triggers for any revolvers other than the Chief's Special. Even if they were available, they probably would not be as smooth and crisp as a carbon steel version because Stainless is harder to machine. Hence the reason S&W discontinued their manufacture in short order.

I’ve owned a number of of 66-1s, 686s, 640, 64, 65, 629s and a 625 that all had stainless in appearance hammers and triggers. What finish would they have been? Here are a few, I’m confused.

My current no dash 686 purchased new by my late father in 1981

66-1

And a 1984 629

The 4” again with a -3 I foolishly sold

Hard chrome plating on those hammers and triggers I believe. I once bought a modern made K frame wide trigger to replace the narrow one in a modern K frame .38, as I liked the wide trigger on my K frame magnum. I tried just drop in replacement and it did not function very well, or poorly. I am not sure what the dimensional differences might be but those parts may or may not work as a drop-in without gunsmithing.

I understand the replacement parts need to be fit, obviously stainless in appearance parts were made. Wondering if earlier dash items would work in the -4.

You could probably disassemble your hammer and trigger and send them off to be hard chromed. You could also simply polish yours. Polished steel does not rust easily.

Personally I love the look of color case hardened hammers and triggers, on nickle, stainless or blue gun. Helps set of the rest of the gun. Anything all one color is kind of plain

To answer your original question......yes, you can replace the hammer and trigger in your new 686 with flash chromed "stainless" parts if you decide to do so.

Remember that fitting may be required to make the new parts function properly.

Thanks, fortunately I have a very qualified gunsmith near me that can handle it.
