Trigger on 4506-1

Recently purchased a 4506-1 in very good condition. I have a question about the trigger. There is a hitch/click in SA pull not to mention a long pre-travel. I'm sure that is probably not the correct term. My question is can this trigger be easily improved or will it require a trip to the gunsmith. Or...should I just accept it as is.

Someone will be along to post the link to the post about the "click" and how to fix it. I can't recall the specific spring that requires work to be done on it. It is as simple as a little push with a pencil eraser and it will work just fine without the click.

As for the "pre-travel" I don't quite understand what you mean. Are you cocking the gun and then pulling the SA trigger?

I don't have the link but I read it. With the gun field striped, there is a bronze or brass tap that sits on top of the trigger group, I believe it is on the forward end. Use a pencil eraser tip and gently push the tap to the rear. I just did it with my 4566 and it worked.

Trigger play spring. It's more of a spring clip, not a coil spring. Odds are it's weakened or broken. You can bend it forward and see if it helps, but if it's truly weakened, it will start clicking again within a few shots. The firearm will function normally but that click is annoying. I finally gave in (it was broken) and sent mine in to S&W for replacement. The 4566 does have a long take up in SA if you release the trigger fully.

Thanks ya'll. What I was calling pre travel is apparently take up. I do release the trigger fully as I've got 30+ years with revolvers and only got into semi-autos a couple of years ago. I still also use the revolvers so old habits are hard to break. I will look at the spring to see if it is broke in order to take any needed action. Again, thanks.

I've had my 4506-1 trigger done twice by S&W because of this issue, but from now on I'm going to fix it myself from the info in the above thread.

This thread motivated me to look at my 4516-2, it was having the same problem. Well here I find both sides of the spring have been broken off.

So, I just ordered a new spring and rivet from Numrich, guess I'll have to take it to a smith to replace it, not sure I'm comfortable redoing that rivet.

I guess all pistols have their Achilles's heel and this one has a rivet to deal with. Hoping that mine stays intact! Probably be good for another decade after the fix.

Took it to the range Friday. Worked great. Reliable and nearly as accurate as my 1911's. Probably just need more practice with it. I didn't even notice the click unless I tried to feel/hear it. Didn't bother me at all. I'm going to the range with it another time or two before I make a decision to do anything about it.

I do believe this site is meant for me. My 4506-1 is my pride and joy. If i had to sell my collection for emergency cash my 4506 and family double barrel would be the only ones left. I too never paid attention to the click till I read the other thread. I went and checked and sure enough it clicks. Luckily its not broke and by pushing it did fix it. Really glad I quit lurking and joined the conversation.

I do know what you mean. I am very pleased with the 4506. She is a keeper. After taking her to the range this past Thursday I noticed that I didn't even pay attention to the click. Shoots great.

The trigger play spring is in no way a critical part.

The California Highway Patrol actually removes the part from their 4006s to prevent it from breaking and tying up the gun at a critical moment.
