Trigger problem on 29-10

I just got a Model 29-10. It's used but barely. Every once in a while when I pull the trigger it sticks in the rear position and I have to place my finger behind the trigger and push it forward to get it back to firing position.

Any ideas on what could be causing this:?

It could be debris in the action, or rough fit parts, but since you are not the original owner, I would first take a look and see if someone replaced / modified the trigger return spring in an attempt to lighten the trigger pull.

Could also be a weak, too light or a broken trigger return spring, bent or broken stud, and yes - it could be just plain dried up oil, grease or crud.

Unless you know the previous owner, you never really know what you are getting with a used car or a used firearm.
It could easily be debris and/or dried lubricant preventing the smooth functioning of the trigger. Lots of people think WD-40 is a lubricant, it is not and the solvent will evaporate and leave a gummy mess.
It could also be a case of a broken trigger return spring, a return spring that had coils cut from it in an attempt to lighten trigger pull, or a light weight spring from one of those "trigger job by replacing springs" kits.
Bent or broken stud? Possible, but certainly hope not.

Does the trigger stick every time or only occasionally? I would expect a weak or cut trigger spring to be cause of the problem if it happened every time you pull the trigger.

If it’s only occasional, it could be something different. Can’t help much there. If you know what you’re doing and have good fitting screwdrivers you could alway pop open the hood and observe what might be happening. Careful not to bugger the screws and make sure to tap the grip frame with non-metal object to loosen the side plate from the frame.

Probably "long ratchets"....a pervasive S&W problem at this point. Oversize and improperly fit ratchets can trap the hand in the hand slot, and prohibit proper trigger return.
