I have been reading about how people will lighten the trigger on the SD9VE by removing the pigtail spring....SO I did so an took the pistol to my range. Fired 3 rounds and the trigger would not reset. Dropped the magazine, removed the un-fired round and reinstalled the pigtail spring. back to the range and fired 15 rounds without a problem. This was the first time the SD9VE had ever failed. Lesson learned... leave the pistol stock.

That's what the pigtail spring does. I have less issue with removing the inner OR outer spring, but removing the pigtail spring carries a huge reliability hit. I shake my head head every time I see that recommendation.

The pigtail spring is a spring in the sear that aids in resetting the trigger, some say for hot loads.

I removed the pigtail spring (and replaced the outer spring with a lighter one) in my SW9VE in an attempt to lighten the trigger pull. It did indeed lighten the trigger by about 4 lbs, with no issue with reset.

Interestingly, according to the patent of the original Sigma, the pigtail was meant to be a backup in case the other two springs in the sear failed.

Here's a pic of the SW9VE sear with and without the pigtail.

After the modest upgrades and polishing tweaks on my SW40VE I've not had one failure to reset. No I did not have the pigtail reinstalled, btw. Maybe at a later time it will be reinstalled, but for now I've not had one failure to reset so I'll leave it alone. YMMV.
