I have just come across (part of a Probate Valuation from a deceased estate) what intrigues me -- a 4" barrelled Triple Lock in what appears to be .44-40. Blued finish, standard markings.
The number on the bottom of the butt is 55, and the Crane # is 2629.
Am I right in thinking that this is "uncommon" ?

55 is the serial number. Is it marked 44 WCF on the barrel? IIRC true 4" shipped guns will have the patent info on the side of the barrel versus the top.

Also barrel shroud and rear of cylinder should be numbered 55. 2629 is an assembly #. Curtis is correct about 4" patent dates on side of barrel because there isn't enough room on top. 4" original guns are scarce, 44-40 as well, I would get a factory letter on that one! Is it British proofed? Post some pics for us to enjoy!
