Trouble with my Model 10-6

I have a 10-6 I picked up several months back and have had a recurring problem with it: It fails to fire every time I pull the trigger. The frequency has varied. For example, last weekend, I shot 30 rounds and I had at least one FTF each cylinder. On other occassions, I have shot 100+ rounds with only one or two FTFs.

For the most part, I should reloads. Initally, I thought maybe it was the primers (CCI) so I switched to Winchester with no noticeable difference. I shot factory ammo and had the same problem. I am pretty much to the "I have no idea what to do" stage.

Any suggestions as to what may be the cause of this? Is there an easy fix? If not, can anyone recommend a good smith in the Las Vegas area that knows his/her way around S&Ws?

Any help is appreciated.

Did you check the screw on the main spring? Should be tight. Could also be a weak or bent main spring.

Thanks for the response John. I check the screw initally, and it was tight (I should have put that in my original post). Any opinions on possibly replacing the mainspring with the Wolff spring kit from Midway? http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=833489

Any experience with this particular product?

Misfires are often caused by primers not being fully seated. Assuming the ammo is good, then it's almost certain that the mainspring force is too light.

Did somebody do a trigger job on this gun before you got it? Many "smiths" grind the end of the strain screw to reduce trigger pull weight and the gun eventually gets light strike misfires.

As for wolff springs: I have found them to be very good. I recommend a Wolff spring set AND a new strain screw to see if that fixes the problem. It should.

The easiest fix might be just to bend the mainspring you have a bit (make it more flat). I use screwdriver handles to bend, apply the bend about 60% up from the base.

devilfrog,

I had that problem with a Model 10. It took a new spring from S&W to fix it.
