Trying new sd9 ve

Can't wait to shoot my new gun. I want to buy eventually Shield for ccw. I owned different firearm brands, but I feel S&W will be mine only company. I don't know why but will stick with them.

Congrats on the acquisition. I carried an SD9VE as my CCW for quite a while. It's actually quite comfortable as appendix carry with the right holster. It conceals nicely with a good IWB holster like one from Shepherd or Alien Gear on the hip locations (3:00/9:00, 4:00/6:00, 5:00/7:00).

It's no different than carrying a Glock as a concealed handgun when it comes to firing status. I carried with one in the chamber, but I also never modified the trigger. Just like a Glock, the only way a chambered SD9/40 will go off is if the trigger is pulled with something (like a booger hook) also pulling the trigger safety portion of the trigger. As long as the trigger is well covered, it's not going to "just go off" due to the firing pin block. The firing pin block is not going to disengage unless the trigger gets pulled. The trigger is not getting pulled unless something gets inside the trigger guard (like a finger) and pulls it on the lower portion. Furthermore, that 8lb pull is not easy to accidentally pull.

Holstering the weapon is the most dangerous part when carrying like this. A good holster that won't have an edge bend into the trigger guard is a must. A good kydex or Crossbreed type holster will suffice.

I now carry a smaller weapon (a Taurus PT709) due to it's thinner profile. I've lost weight and want to wear more form fitting shirts. The SD9VE will be my nightstand/range/trips to the acreage (lots of mean wild hogs here in TX) gun. I carry it chambered. It too has a safety switch on the trigger. It also has a thumb safety. I engage the safety when holstering and disengage it once it's holstered.

Any carry gun, regardless of firing status or where it's carried, should be in a holster. Whether it's in a pocket, a purse, a fanny pack, inside the waistband, or on the belt--it needs to be in a holster that covers the trigger guard on both sides.

Have owned my SD9VE since 8-2-2014 and have over 1,000 rounds through mine with no issues.

As far as carry (ou1954) Carrying the SD9VE or my M&P's is just like carrying a double action revolver; nothing goes "bang" until you pull the trigger. So, when I carry ANY of my handguns, they are loaded and ready to fire when needed. 6 rounds in the cylinder of my Model 10, 16 + 1 in the SD9VE, 17 + 1 in my M&P 9, 10 + 1 in my M&P 45, 15 + 1 in my Ruger P89DC and 8 + 1 in my Ruger SR1911-"Cocked & Locked" in Condition 1.

Zeljo and anyone else who just purchased a SD9VE.,CONGRATULATIONS, and if you have shot the new gun I know you are very happy. I bought one at my local store yesterday. Mine came with 10 round magazines(no problem, probably gonna need them before Obama gets out of office),while I was waiting for the background check to finish up I also picked up a blister packaged 16 round mag for 39 $. Total for the SD9VE was $379.00 out the door. Mine was made in 10/01/2013. Spent last evening playing and cleaning. Took the striker out and swabbed out the striker bore. Feels like mine is one of the 8 lb. triggers and is very smooth and breaks right at the end of travel. I love it. Took it to the back yard this afternoon and fired 5 rounds at 10 yards and made a 1.5" cluster of five on a paper plate. I could not find the emptys in the dead grass, so at least I know they didn't land at my feet. I plan to make this my carry gun, when I figure out how I will carry it.I will still have my Airweight 642 in my pocket. I will probably carry IWB. I gotta tell you all I have owned 3 Sigma 40's and 1 Sigma 9 along with an M&P 40C and a Shield 9. I would NOT trade my new friend for any of the above. I love this gun and I plan on keeping and carrying it. I feel that S&W has a real hit with this firearm. I will not mess with the trigger it is perfect.

Good write up. I have the SW40VE, and I love that gun. I like the .40 S&W round, but that is the only pistol I have in .40....the rest are 9mm Luger, 9mm MAK, and .380 ACP.

I do want to add the SD9 to my battery. They are running around 370 dollars or so around me. I am waiting until one of the LGS around me have the 325 dollar sale on them.

You said yours has about an 8 pound trigger? The one on my SIGMA .40 is around 9.4 pounds now. When I first got it a few years ago, it was more like 10.2 pounds. No problem though, for I like heavier trigger pulls on a handgun. Ones that are too light make me nervous. Hell, the 5.5 pound pull of a Glock makes me nervous! Lol.

I have a nice Bianchi OWB holster for my SIGMA, that is actually for a G19, but fits the .40 like it was made for it. It also has a top retention strap, which I like.

I seldom carry the SD. It has the full Apex kit on it and it's trigger is just a hair over 5 lbs. the Apex trigger shortened the trigger pull and reset to the point where I would not be comfortable carrying it with a round in the chamber. It's just too light. If your SD has a stock trigger, carrying a round in the chamber would be no issue at all - it was designed to be used that way.
