I’ve been trying to do research and better date my Model 36 I recently got. I just want to make sure the information I’m getting is interpreted correct. Please correct anything if im wrong and any information would be greatly appreciated.

I think I’ve kinda learned the ball park it was made by the serial number on the bottom but I’m more confused on the way I’ve only seen it explained.

1957 = 117770-125000
(Mine - 238353)
1962 = starts at 295000
With this above would my revolver fall in between 57-62 or am I reading it wrong?

Welcome aboard from ol' Wyo.

Based on many others that bracket your serial number in the database, I'd estimate Smith & Wesson shipped it in the spring of 1962.

Awesome! thank you, this is my first S&W I’ve owned but trying to get info on them (unless it’s newer model) has definitely been a little more challenging than I initially thought.

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! Well, you hit the jackpot on your first post. Two-bit cowboy is the S&W expert on the Chiefs Special (Model 36). However, if you want to know more about it, you might consider buying a copy of the Standard Catalog of S&W, 5th Edition by Supica and Nahas.

I’m glad he was online to help for sure lol. I’ll look that up and order it ASAP, I’m always looking for new reads and information so thank you.
