Tul Ammo vs. Federal 9mm-Tul more accurate??

First let me say I am 64 years old and just got into guns last Oct. 2011. I am now obsessed!! In fact, I had never even picked up a gun until then. I have been practicing with my new RIA 1911 9mm using Federal 115gr FMJ ammo. For the most part the gun has been shooting about 2-3" high and right. I compensated by shooting low and left. I had read about Tul Ammo being cheap and decided to try some. Got 2 50rnd boxes at Walmart for $9.99 each. I aimed low/left and to my surprise the POI was low/left not on center over 5 9rnd mags. I did a test alternating a Tul mag with a Federal mag, 2 each. Low and behold, the Tul seems to shoot straighter than Federal. See picture of 4 targets. The question/curiosity I have is WHY would this happen?? Why does one mfg's rounds shoot better than anohter, especially a "cheap" round like Tul. BTW, the Tul is very smokey and smelly. Even with the outdoor fan blowing I was choking on the smoke.

Its pretty obvious your gun likes the tula ammo better. there are several other "cheap" brands. You could also try winchester white box from walmart. its around $23/100 here.

All guns will have loads that they favor. Differences in bullet shape, diameter, sectional density, powder charge and burn rate and even case tension on the bullet case changes in point of impact. .22 LR guns are most noted for favoring one ammo over another.

In you case the Federal load is probably slightly higher velocity causing it to print lower. I've shot a good bit of both Walmart Federal and Tula through my 9MM's. Both have been equally accurate and both hit POA in most of the 9MM's I shoot, though there are variances. The Tula ammo is very smoky, thus I will not shoot it indoors. There are several online vendors of quality factory reloaded 9MM- Precision Cartridge and Freedom Munitions come to mind.-They load cleaner ammo than the Tula and it will cost less than $9.99/box per 1000 round case delivered.

Low and behold, the Tul seems to shoot straighter than Federal.

No offense, but this statement makes it clear you are very new to the shooting game. The fact that one ammo shoots to POA in YOUR gun does not mean it "shoots straighter."
All it means is that its trajectory matches how your sights are set--maybe. Shooting offhand leaves a lot of the human factor to consider: how you hold the gun and release the trigger can move the POI considerably.

Have never shot Tula ammo but have heard it's more corrosive is all I know.However lately I have been buying a lot of it in 9mm & 7.62x39. I signed on for that very question to get a few opinions on it.Yeah I know a little late to the party but we just got a Wall mart here.

used Tulammo for the first time last week in several guns in the 9mm and had 0 problems. It works for me and my guns.

I have not even got a good guess as to how much Tula ammo I have fired in 9mm, .40 S&W and .45 ACP. I do know that I have fired it in Sigs, Glocks, Colts, S&W's with completely excellent results. All these handguns have been standard factory issue w/o any changes made to springs, etc. I have fired the .45 ACP Tula in both 1911's and a S&W 625-2. The .40 S&W was fired almost exclusively through a Glock G-22RTF. The 9mm was fired in Glocks and Sigs. Function was perfect w/o any exceptions. On target POI was POA compared to results obtained at the same distances using ball ammunition produced by domestic manufacturers. The Tula ammo is non-corrosive primed as is the norm for all modern ammunition. The steel case is not typically reloadable, but happily it also is disposable which I count a real positive when I am firing at a indoor range that does not permit recovery of fired brass... or when I am out in the woods/fields plinking and walking around.

Tula shoots accurately enough for me. The steel case will speed up extractor wear to a degree.

Tula is not corrosive. There really is no such thing as "more corrosive" It either has salts in the primer or doesnt. Tula is standards commercial boxer primed. There have been some Yuly and I believe Novosibirsk ammo that came in corrosive. What happened there was that the factory put in surplus primers. There was also an import of current manufactured Bulgarian ammo that was corrosive

I have noted lately that sometimes cheap ammo is (for what ever reason) is more accurate than the expensive stuff.

My CZ 453 American LOVES cheap promotional Hi-Vel. Federal and Winchester ammo MUCH MUCH more than it does the Eley black boxed competition target grade stuff. Hey........... works for me!

i noticed there is less recoil with tula ammo, more mis-feeds, bullet shot into 4 fragments onto the target, and alot more muzzle flash. Thats comparing it to Federal/Winchester.
