Went to my nearest Cabelas this weekend to buy some ammo..
Found some TulAmmo 223 on sale for $28 for the 100 round box..
Its the steel cased ammo and I have been kind of worried about its reliability..
Has anyone had any issues with this ammo and should I be worried ?...
Had some major flooding in our area so I have to wait a few days for the roads to be cleared so I can make it to the range...

be aware that most AR manufactures state in the written warranty that steel cased ammo voids the warranty...
I wont use it in my AR's

Tula is fine for plinking, but I would not depend on it for self defense. Find some brass cased stuff for self-defense and serious use.

I have personally experienced 2-3 failure to fires out of a hundred or so rounds of the Tula at times. Not every time mind you, but consistent enought to get my attention.

I will wait till the end of my range session and usually two of the three will fire the second time around and I will have the occasional odd round that won't go off at all. It is like they set the primers too deep at times in order to allow a good firing pin strike.

I have not had that experience with steel cased wolf, wolf military classic, silver bear, Monarch, Brown Bear, or Hornady steel cased ammo. Your mileage may vary. I have seen some on the interweb claim Tula ammo is the greatest thing since sliced bread, and that it has been problem free for them; but my experience with it has been different.

I still use it to plink with but I don't trust it for serious use.

The only issue I have with it is that the two nearest ranges banned steel cased, bi-metal jacketed ammo of all calibers. If it doesn't pass a magnet test, you can't shoot it on their range. It's particularly hypocritical on the part of one of the ranges. They sell steel cased ammunition by the box and by the case.

Shoot it up. Have fun. :)

I WILL NOT shoot that steel case junk in my rifle, or any of my other guns.

Although steel cased ammo will wear out an AR-15 faster than brass cased ammo will, the parts that wear out still take a LONG time to do so, and you have to buy and shoot lots of ammo.

Even if you do shoot a boatload of steel ammo, the parts that wear out faster, the barrel and extractor, are inexpensive and easy to replace on an AR.

No it sucks....I base this on Internet half truths and assumptions and rumors

Hasn't failed in either of my colts. Just shot 300 out of my Springfield TRP 1911 on Sunday. Every gun I owned .... if they made ammo for it I shot it. In thousands of rounds nothing whatsoever broke my guns didn't wear out or fall apart. Accuracy was about as good as avg range ammo, my barrel didn't melt and in all that time I had exectly one problem. One 9mm round needed a second strike out of my glock

It comes comes to personal and where you plan to reload in the future. My only concern with steel case ammo is the possibility of a case getting stuck. Some people have never had a problem and others have. If you have a dewey rod or an appropriately sized wooden dowel in case such an event occurs, then you should be fine.

Me personally, I want to reload in the future, so I'll go with the cheapest brass cased ammo I can find and plink with that.

Thanks for the replies..
I am using it for plinking only so I will give it a try weekend....

Yeah, I have a Smith and Wesson MP15A that kind of likes Tulammo. It groups as good or better with Tulammo than it does most cheap brass ammo. I have been shooting strictly steel cased ammo through it just to see how long it does last compared to brass only rifles.

If you do some basic math, the money saved using the steel cased stuff is WAY more than the cost of a barrel swap and a new extractor.

A few of us shot up 1K rounds of WOLF WPA POLYFORMANCE steel ammo this past weekend. I ordered another 1K rounds today. At .20 CPR VS .25-35 CPR......well, you do the math!

Here's a link to a test of 10,000 brass versus steel case rounds through AR-15's with a lot of objective data. There are various ways you can look at the data. Steel case ammo vs. brass case was as accurate up to 2,000 rounds when accuracy started to fade for the steel case ammo but by 6,000 rounds steel case was significantly (depending on your definition of significant) less accurate (with some keyholing) than brass case ammo; the steel case was minimally more likely to malfunction at roughly 1 in 1,000 rounds versus zero for brass case; and steel case caused significantly more wear to the rifle than brass case ammo at 10,000 rounds (depending on your definition of significant). It could be argued more frequent cleaning and a slower rate of fire might have given better results for the steel case ammo. You can make your own decision:

The real issue with that test wax that it was done in one day. 10k rounds in one day is none stop shooting. Round after round after round....like a full auto. In cases like that even full autos get barrel changes rather quickly. Under 10k rounds

Arik,
Steel case ammo voids the warranty
Ah gotcha.

Ok but how can anyone tell?

And to answer the question. ...no not really. Mostly because I buy police guns. They are long past their warranties. Also most companies stand behind their products regardless. I've sent back guns twice. Both were used and I was at least the 2nd owner. In both cases neither company asked me questions. One replaced the slide and the other company just gave me a whole new gun
