Caught several, seen a few more up close...
I (we) have caught several species of sharks here off the Carolina Coast. I caught them from babies to 3-4 feet long. Especially when fishing over a wreck we got a lot sharks and stingrays. Those things are BIG and like trying to pull up a safe.
The scariest encounter was when me and a buddy were up to our shoulders surf fishing close to a buoy at the harbor's entrance. Suddenly a LARGE shark fin's broke and approached the buoy and did a go around and swam on. My friend, who prided himself in courage looked at me and said, "I think we'd better get out of here." I agreed. Because of it's size, color, location and behavior, I believe it might have been a Bull Shark. The size of the fin looked at least as large as my hands from the wrist overlapping to make a triangle. 6', maybe 8'.
A friend was surfing and up on a wave and saw a big shark in the wave, as he put it, "Like looking at it on a TV set. It had tried to get him, but he mounted his board and 'broke contact'.
Sharks are scarier now than ever before because they, including big man eaters are coming very close to shore. They caught a (I think 13') Great White off our coast some years ago.
It's something how sharks are still so fascinating all this time after 'Jaws' rocked the world.
