It all started about a week ago, In 48 hours I lost the head lights/running/ and brake lights in my 89 Dodge diesel, A front wheel bearing in the Jetta, Blew the power steering hose in the chevy and lost headlights/running lights in my Discovery, It was a rough two days for me, Plus I was sick with toncilitis, I was wondering what I did to have this all fall on me, Wondering if I had bad JUJU,,, I went today to pick up all the parts needed to make everything right in my vehicular stable, And after picking up the parts I stopped by my local gun shop,,,,,,,,
WAIT FOR IT,,, Just stopped in to say HI !
I had been looking for a shooter model 38. And it seems they are an overpriced bugger, Well in the case was a "new" looking model 38-1, And sitting right next to it was a model 649 no dash with box and all papers/cleaning kit ect, Although neather was pinned, nor very old,
Model 38-1 BDB10**
model 649 ALW33**
I took a moment to think about things, and my last weeks of luck before wondering what I could bring home the pair for.
The best I could get them for was 650 OTD for the pair,,,
Thinking "WHAT ARE THE CHANCES" I got them both, I havent spent any time cleaning eather before the photo shoot, But I am happy with the pair, I have never owned a body guard till today, and really just wanted a model 38 to carry, But what is one to do when this happens, I did however pass on the model 13 with a 3" barrel for 350.
And here is one pic

What would a I BOUGHT THIS thread be without at least 1 pic.
How'de I do, I have never looked for a 649 before?

I cant seem to find the manufacture date on eather in the Smith and wesson catolog of firearms, Some help here please?!!
Peter.

Yep, you did well. I had been on the lookout for one in California for a couple years, and happened upon a NIB 649 nodash with box and papers for "more than I wanted to spend". But I spent it anyway.

Lo and behold a few weeks later a model 49 popped up for ~$375, also in LNIB -- grips show some wear but the gun is cherry.

I can't say I'm inclined to be worried that I have both

Hey powerkicker, I noticed the bright spot on the barrel in the pic, Made me go back and look at the gun, Well, It doesnt appear to be there in real life, The pic was in my back yard filled with 60' oak trees, and I tried to get them out of the spotty sunlight, May have just been some movement in the leaves as I shot the pic.

Now I wonder, Which one would you all carry?
They are both really nice, and the 38 barely has any turn ring, Once I clean them I doubt if you will even see a ring at all, Is one rarer that the other?
Are 649s in 38 sp tough to find?
I know that 38s are, Whatever I carry will show it in a couple of months, So if you were to diminish the value of one of them, Which would it be?
Peter.

Nice pair of bodyguards. I'm glad that I was not there to see the model 13 3 inch for 350.00. I would have probably bought something I don't need.

Landpimp is correct, the M38-1 has to be 88 or 89 because the -1 came out in 1988 and the M38-2 was made in 1990.

The M649 was introduced in 1985 and the M649-1 was made in 1988 so there's not too much room for guessing there either.

As for which to carry, I would go with the M649 since it's rated for .38 Special +P and the M38 isn't. That is unless the M649 is too heavy for your liking and then the Airweight would be better. In any event I would shoot the M649 much more for practice than I would the M38.

Very nice revolvers, good find for sure...

At the San Antonio show today I noticed one dealer had a case loaded with 649s. He told me he took 60 in from a PD and he was selling them for $299. Some of them looked quite nice, but I went for a nice 2" 10-7 from him instead. I've always wanted one of those...
