How about this new fangled Twitter deal? Anybody use this or know people who do? Is there a specific hand-held device to use the service or do you use your cellphone and computer?

Maybe it's just the grumpy old guy in me, but I guess I don't see how this is productive? I suppose if you had a small circle of friends who you frequently go to lunch with it would be more efficient to send a 'tweet' then having to call all of them.

'Following people' seems odd to me, and one wonders why people feel the need to follow others lives? Is there something missing in their own lives perhaps? Seems like Jr. highschool with the whole most popular girl/guy syndrome.

Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read other users' updates known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length which are displayed on the user's profile page and delivered to other users who have subscribed to them (known as followers). Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends or, by default, allow anybody to access them. Users can send and receive tweets via the Twitter website, Short Message Service (SMS) or external applications.

Yeah, it's something else kids can do in school besides pay attention and study.

We are raising the dumbest generation ever that is totally immersed in their own daily social trivia, avoiding contact with adults as much as possible. There's even a book out on it, but I guarantee the kids aren't reading it.

I don't twitter and I don't tweet. After a big plate of fajitas though I have been known to toot a bit.

I have an account.... but I only logged on once. I really don't see why it is so popular other than for people to listen to the ramblings of their favorite movie star.... or politician. McCain twitters....

As far as people twittering so friends can see what they are up to, there are already cell phones, text messages, facebook, myspace.....

I'm glad when I'm running out of the house I don't have to stop and log onto three different sites to update my status.

Kids these days! I mean.. I AM 24, and I do understand all these things, but I DON'T get why they're so dang popular.

I dont tweeter or tweet,
I dont lie and cheat.
If,n ya want to get ahold of me,
just speak.

Sounds like you teach too. Functionally, twit is the end product of the tweet. Joe

Nope me neither.

Don't see the point. Seems like a pretty silly way to waste time and get attention.

Is it like someone giving you the bird? I've been getting those messages for years. In another six months it will be called something else. What vital information could you post that would bring about a significant change in the economy, politics, taxes, or alter a government?

I don't think there is enough (any for that matter, sometimes even me) people out there that care what I'm doing from minute to minute. For that matter I can go my entire life without knowing what everybody else is doing minute to minute. I'm not anti-social, I just mind my own business.

The whole twitter, facebook, my page, whatever thing just totally confounds me. I value my privacy and security. Why in the hell do people put their entire lives on the internet for the whole world to see?
If .gov, muslim extremest or space aliens decide to take an interest in you, all they need is a few clicks to get all the info they need. Just how stupid is this?

Alright... the young'n has to chime in here with a tweet or two:

First off, a little respect for the youth today, who, believe it or not, have to deal with issues that simply didn't exist when you were growing up. Just because we approach problems in a seemingly different manner doesn't mean we're incompetent idiots, so lighten up on us younger folks!

Second, and for the record: I do not use twitter, facebook, myspace, or the like. Not because it is a "dumb" tool (there are no dumb tools), but because I personally have no use for it.

I do use email, Google, Skype, a cell phone, text messaging, wireless internet access, mobile broadband, HDTV and Blue-ray... how about you? -- all of these technologies share their root in some "dumb kid" playing Nintendo instead of baseball. Be thankful for our "slacker hackers".

My observation: the pace of technology advance in the last 10 years has been astounding. So outrageous in fact, that new technology is often not designed with a specific purpose when it was developed. It's kind of like: ok, we have the ability to send short messages to mobile individuals, now what? (btw, and aside, to answer one of the questions brought up above, I would suspect that most Twitter users are using it through their mobile phone web browsers, which have gotten real good in the last 3-4 years...) Eventually, people will find ways to use Twitter that will knock your socks off.

For example, I work for a professional services firm (a civil engineering firm). I would love it if we had a inter-office "twitter-like" software application that was always running in the background on my desktop. When I have a question that can be answered by a colleague in a few short sentences, should I 1) walk down the hallway maybe to find that they aren't there, or that they aren't the right person to ask, thus wasting my time and theirs, or 2) call them on the phone, interrupting them and potentially having similar troubles as number 1), or 3) send out a short "tweet" to the office... "hey, anyone out there know if we can drill a 200 foot boring in a week?" and allow the most knowledgeable co-worker to reply at their convenience with something like "yeah, we did it last week, see the Smith file." If i need more info, I look at the Smith file and / or now specifically target this individuals time when making in-person or over the phone inquiries. I think you will all agree this allows all parties involved to be as efficient as possible.

...To be continued....

When I have a question that can be answered by a colleague in a few short sentences,

This old bird doesn't tweet but I do keep in contact with all my peeps during the business day via AIM (personal) and Windows Messenger (business contacts).

Just curious about these. I had it pretty easy (only the 60's to deal with, then a jimmy carter recession while trying to raise a family) but my folks survived the Depression, and are Holocaust survivors.

Well our generation through Obama is sure going to get even with these spoiled kids. They are never going to get out debt or drive a real car! I dont feel good about that!

Well, only 2 pages to get to the Obama bashing.

For the application above, I use e-mail, not twitter. I can ask more detailed questions, and some of my colleagues answer their e-mails very promptly. The other ones wouldn't answer twitter either.

And e-mail has lots of benefits - you can use attachments easily, for one thing. And the company I work for has a corporate culture that emphasizes e-mail.

We've had the capability for international E-mail since 1972. Back then, we had our own (giant) satellite dish on property for our leased satellite uplink. The rest of the world has caught up to us now.

Mostly.

If I had someone who I thought would read my twitter stuff, and it would be productive, I might try it.

I've got a Blackberry, so I've got access to e-mail anyway, so I tend to use that.

There's always some application that young women use to keep in touch with each other. A long time ago, it was 3-way calling. Then it was IM, now it's things like facebook and twitter.

And vast numbers of people seem to be interested in the day to day doings of famous people.

If I was uncharitable, I might call it gossip.
