Two acquisitons for the collection!

I just won a couple of auctions:

This is a New Police/Police Positive "Transitional" model from 1908. This is one of my favorite models and I have been trying to get one from every agency that issued them. This is a new agency in this model for me. My reference books indicate that this is Providence R.I. This is an unusual barrel length too.





The second one is a S&W model of 1899. The serial number is in the 61xx range. Despite the rough condition, there has to be some history here. I'll letter it for sure. The price was right for a gamble: about $97 including the shipping.







The detective work now begins..... ! :)

The 1899 may prove fascinating when lettered, and I can understand why you like those little police positives. I've happened across a few and they are the only old DA Colts that ever truly tempt me.

Is that type of engraving on the backstrap typical of Police guns? I have one gun that has something very similar, but I can't figure out what it means, I just assumed it was someone's initials.

Your gun letters as being shipped to Portland. I'd get a map and look for towns around there with the initials F and H (assuming the P stands for Police).

Both revolvers arrived today. The 1899 has maybe 10% of the original nickel left and the stocks could be from Victory model and were rounded to fit the frame. This one should have a story to tell. The letter request will go out tomorrow........
