Howdy,
I took delivery of a couple of new style bullets to try for the 25-2.
I loaded up a couple of different loads, got a break in the weather and blasted off early today to make a trip to the range.
I shot a rifle a little before the wind got up and went over to the bullseye range to test the new .45 ammo.
Well, no moon clips. They are stored with the ammo I normally use at home.
When I got home I decided to store a moon clip and couple of empty cases in the gun so I don't get caught out with out one in the future.
I should have more data to post in the 25-2 accuracy thread soon but bad weather is setting in and Christmas will keep me busy so it might be after New Years day before I post anything there.
Hope some one can use the moon clip tip and Merry Christmas everyone!
Mike

You can shoot without them. I usually do, finding it faster to punch empties with a pencil than moon and demoon.
You do need to taper crimp, though.

The owner's manual for all the new 625s direct that clips be used. Not sure when they began this policy, but I found out when a fellow came back and said he had several fail-to-fires when he skipped the clips with his new Smith. This was about three years ago.
I also read an article from a reliable (but no longer memorable!) source who had done some accuracy testing in regards to using/not using clips and he found a significant improvement in grouping when clips were used. I have not found the correlation myself, but the way I shoot, it comes as no surprise!
I still shoot without them on a regular basis, but thought I should pass along what I have found.
Shoot straight and good luck.

Thanks

Hi Folks,
Thanks,
I am trying to keep things somewhat constant in the way I'm testing loads. Now I have another thing to try. Will the 25-2 shoot the same with or with out moon clips?
I did shoot the loads I had today, one was poor, the other showed promise for 8 rounds out of ten in a pretty good group with two way out. (mother of all fliers).
This gun shoots pretty good but it is very particular to the bullets it likes.
Known loads I use in my bullseye guns won't shoot groups at all in this gun. Hard ball or hard cast bullets have not done well. The one load I shot today was a hard cast that I need to work with a little more before I give up on it.
Also, from what I read the type of moon clip can even make a difference in group size. Some folks recommending Rimz over steel.
Anyway, thanks for the advice. I had been posting some 25-2 info in the 1961-1980 threads. That is where I thought I left this post. The older I get the dumber I get. There are times I can't believe they let me out of the house with a gun or a car.
Thanks again
Mike

Mike, I've used the 25-2 without moon clips, and fine no difference in how the rounds shoot. I prefer to use the clips, but SWC bullets are sometimes a pain to load with the moon clips. My 25-2 seems to shoot best with hardball consistently. After the firswt of the year I plan to try some of the Magnus bullets you mentioned, the swagged ones. I've read somewhere that swagged bullets tend to group better in the 25-, as most of them have larger cylinder throats. Mine seem to be .455.
