Two New Guns

Hey y'all,

I just bought a couple new pieces of hardware from a "late husband liquidation sale." I got a very nice 10-5 with the box, papers and tools and I don't know what the other one is 'cause there's no model number. Just kidding, it's a Highway Patrolman, my all-time favorite .357; something I've wanted for a while!

About the 10-5 (D345953 1971-72):
This pistol is near-mint! The only issue is that the pistol was stored in a holster for who knows how long, so there is some pitting on the cylinder from it. It does not appear to have been fired, except for at the factory and there is no turn line. If not for the small pits, this gun would be 100%. It came with the target stocks (no SN), but I put the magnas on to give it more of a factory look. Can anyone tell me what the stock code 'S' is on the box?

Highway Patrolman (S119487 1954-1955):
This one is in okay condition. It once belonged to a cop (who I assume carried it daily), so there is holster wear, small pits on the cylinder and patina on the backstrap and trigger guard. However, the bore and chambers are excellent. The stocks do not have a serial number and I highly doubt presentation targets were factory with a HP. Like I said, I've always wanted one and the condition is fine for what I'll be using it for- shooting (a lot) and open/woods carry. I'm extremely pleased with it. Now I just need its little brother, the Outdoorsman.

I definately wanted the HP, but I really didn't need another fixed sight .38 that won't get shot, lol. But I couldn't pass it up in that condition with all the goodies. I paid $650 for both. What do y'all think?

The S indicates it shipped with Magna stocks. In this case, they would have been the modified Magna type, also called PC Magna.

Unless there was a special order, Model 10 revolvers were not shipped with target stocks. Someone added those to your gun after it was sold at retail.

You did outstanding. You turn that model 10 around for $400 on this forum very quickly if you don't want to keep it.

My model 28-2 is like yours, it was carried a lot, but probably not shot a lot. I love the patina on it. And I shoot it a lot, hopefully you will do the same.

Franzas, I do not reload, but that 28-2 will handle any factory Magnum load you put through it. If you want to shoot magnums from it, I think you almost have to put some 125 grain loads through it, as that was the legendary Police round.

Since I usually shoot indoors, I typically put some 158 grain 38specials through it. You can shoot those all day in that gun.

What are some good loads for the Highway?

If it helps, I have been shooting .38 Special midrange loads through my Highway Patrolman revolvers (and other models) for more than 4 decades. My favorite load, by far, is 3.5 grains of Red Dot behind a 158 grain hard cast semi-wadcutter bullet. Recoil in an N frame is quite mild and accuracy is excellent. You could shoot as many of these as you want to in your HP from now until the cows come home and never wear it out.

For .357 Magnum loads, any load that produces SAAMI standard pressures or less will be fine.

I have a 4 inch 28-2 that we all regularly shoot 200 grain Cast Performance Gas Checks out of at 1,250 FPS. Can you say THUMP? You can't hurt that HP..shoot it!
