Two new K's

Picked up a couple of K frames last week. A K22 made in 1948 and a Model 10 made in, I'm just guessing, mid 1940's (serial 15XXX). Both in absolutely pristine condition. I found the 10 at the local Scheels store and walked out the door with it for $380. I am an N frame guy and only have one K frame in addition to these, but both of these just shouted at me.

Those are nice looking K frames.

The fixed sight .38 is a .38 Military & Police. It should have a "C" prefix to the serial number on the butt and probably dates to the late 1940s, after S&W went to the short action.

Some folks refer to those as pre-Model 10s, as model numbers weren't added to the description until 1957 and the model stampings didn't show up until 1958.

Not possible unless the serial has been modified. Your M&P has a 4 line address that was implemented in 1948 and a short-throw "fishhook" hammer also implemented in 1948. It has to have a "C" prefix even if the C is separated from the numbers. Are you taking the serial from the bottom of the butt frame?

I am betting there is a C. Often the C is at the far forward edge of the butt, and the number placed to the far rear so a big gap between the C and the number

There can be no question that this .38 M&P (not a Model 10) is in the C prefix serial sequence. Five-screw frame, knurled extractor rod end, High Speed hammer, four-line address. The last three together tell us for certain that it is no earlier than March 1948. C15000 would put shipment in the second half of 1948.

The stocks are period correct and are probably original. $380 is a good price.

Congratulations! I'm not a big .38 M&P fan, but that K-22 is a beauty! I also own a 1948 K-22 with the 4-line address. It's a fun and very accurate shooter! Enjoy!

I didn't take the photo as stated. I relooked and saw the C. Presbyopia.
