Two Tone 686...

I purchased this a while back and then sold it to a friend. Been thinking about buying it back and figured I would see what the deal is with them.

686, don't remember what dash number though. Has blued cylinder and barrel. Barrel is laser etched not stamped. I gave $400 a couple years ago and have the chance to get it back in the same price. Any insight into how many of these or why they are running around. Came with box etc but replaced the rubber grips with the ones you see on it now. Pretty sure I got it at Big 5 or one of those chain stores.

ANY 686 in working order for $400.00 is great deal. A more rare model like that should be worth more.

I think that you need to get it back. 586's (686 too) are great! I like that 1 in your pic. Somebody might want to give you $600 for it too! I have a 586 no dash from 1983. Wonderful trigger!

If it was someone's project pinto, the value isn't particularly high. Nonetheless, if it's simply clean and straight, then it is indeed worth every bit of what you'll pay back for it. Great balanced shooter with the long barrel.

Cylinder and yoke swaps are relatively easy if one wants a Pinto, but somebody went to a lot of trouble to replace the barrel as well. Sure the barrel has not been coated? I don't own any and am not up-to-speed with what they can do now, but it is my understanding that stainless guns can be "blued".

Should have it back today.. I don't think its a Pinto as the bluing was "different" than that of my 586's at the time. Will post better pics of it. The pic is one I took of it back in 2007. Camera's have came such a long way.

BTW every other smith I have ever owned had the barrel lettering engraved or stamped or whatever they do. This one's barrel is laser etched.

If you still have the Box, what does the End Label say as far as the Finish?? Reason I ask is S&W did make some 686's in what they referred to as "Black Stainless" & the End Label Information may explain the difference you are seeing in the Bluing you mentioned if it was in fact a Factory Two-Tone Revolver!! Not saying it is, but may give you some further insight into it being done at the factory rather than after the fact!! If it's Original it will, or should, indicate so on the Label!! Just a thought!!

Those photos give a much better idea as to what the finish looks like & although I've never personally owned one of the Midnight Black Stainless Finish Revolvers it does look like the ones I've seen in the past!! They weren't Two-Tone as yours is, but the Finish itself looks to be identical!! If the Box for this Revolver still exists, the Product Code on the End Label should let us know if in fact it's original or not!! Other than that the only way is to have Roy research it & see what he finds!! By the way, S&W "Did" build some Late Two-Tone Revolvers with parts leftover from earlier production runs so there's still a possibility this Revolver is Original as it stands!! Just out of curiosity, when your friend returns ask him what the Serial No. Letter Prefix & Model No. Stamping is?? That may also give us a clue!!
