UDATE: Range Rpt :advice on insdie the barrel rust/pitting in a 1920ish 1905 ?

In my experience, a bore doesn't have to look like it came off the assembly to shoot respectably.

My Dad bought a couple of CMP Garands in the early 2000's. He was nice enough to buy me one and he bought one for himself. I did the break down and deep cleaning on both of them. The bore on mine was super nice and shiny and in great shape. His looked like the proverbial sewer pipe and I did everything I could to get it cleaned up.

I didn't do extensive testing but his seemed to shoot what a typical WWII Garand with M2 ball should. I recall getting about 4 MOA with it. And the thing is his bore looked bad ALL the way down. But I think the Crown is where it matters most and I think it was fine.

I would definitely shoot your revolver good amount with several different kinds of ammo before you pass judgment. It may be just fine.

I appreciate all the words of encouragement. After I get around to shooting this S&W, if the accuracy is so bad, I might, and I mean might due to living on Social Security, take it to my gunsmith and have him do a counter-sink target crown inside the barrel getting rid of the severe pitting in the last 1/8 inch or so. That is if he's willing and it doesn't cost too much. Or, I just may put it away. It's not like I can't shoot the other 7 K-frames I have of more modern vintage.

Maybe try some wadcutters and see how they do? One load that has shot really well in both of my guns is PMC's 132 grain FMJ. I think they load kind of weak and seem to be consistent.
