UM boot grips.

I'm normally a if it's a revolver that gets carried it has wood stocks/grips guy, but I've been using them on my 642 and sometimes on my model 10 snub and I'm very impressed with them. They aren't very "grabby" especially the J-frame ones since they are more used than the K/L ones.

For a hard use revolver I'm sold on these, that being said I'll keep using wood on my carry revolvers unless I know I'm going to be doing something that will more than likely damage them.

What do you guys think about them?

I like them well enough, but don't think they do anything that S&W's factory "fish scales" do just as well and at less cost (sometimes significantly less cost). Hogue and Pachmayr's offerings are as good, too.

UM's I think are sought after most simply because they're currently out of production.

Practically speaking, though, no better no worse.

Uncle Mikes are the best of the best non-wood grips IMO. I put them on any K/L or J that I'm shooting. They are not however worth anything close to 3 figures. I've bought plenty of them and never paid more than $60 (and that one was new in package).

Note: S&W still has Uncle Mikes J frame boot grips on clearance for $14.95 plus shipping directly from their online store.

The UM grips IIRC are based on and were done in collaboration with Graig Spegel..... ie. his grip design in rubber....... I have a couple sets tucked away for "hard use"!

You could get two sets of Spegel wood grips (smooth in Black Walnut) for that money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Indeed. Although in all fairness, that links to J-frame UM boots; the grips discussed herein are the K-frame version, which are admittedly much harder to find these days compared to the Js.

Still...some asks beg for a market correction.

I've been an Uncle Mike's fan for years and have always used their boot grip on my 2" J-frames (note that they will take speedloaders whereas the newer factory boot grips with the fish scales will not). However, my new favorite for my round butt K-frames is the Hogue Bantam. They fill the hand well and are very compact. They go especially well with the 2" K-frames. The larger Uncle Mike's combat grips for the RB K-frame are really nice on the 3" guns but admittedly they are now in short supply. It all boils down to the old law of supply and demand and how badly you really want something.

S&W stopped using Uncle Mike grips sometime around 2008. About the same time UM stopped making grips altogether. Not sure why. Seemed like a viable business to me.

About this same time S&W started making their own branded synthetic grips, which they still use to this day. Makes me wonder if S&W just bought UM's grip business and moved it in-house.

Uncle Mikes boot grips are probably my favorite "Goodyear" for J-frames.

I hate the new S&W boot grips.

Holy Smokes! I have been pulling UMs off of S&Ws for years and tossing them in a cardboard box of old grips. The value of that box just took a big jump. I much prefer Hogue's to UMs. I'm going to have to inventory those rejects, clean them a little and put'em on fleabay. ......... Big Cholla

I have the Uncle Mike's extended rubber combat grips on all three of my 3" K Frames, as well as on my hard kickkin' 2" 940 and 2" 60.





I like nice wood grips on a S&W revolver just as much as most, but the black grips on a stainless revolver just look good to me and are very functional on a working and shooting gun. My son calls the 3" 13 with the black UM grips 'The black widow'.

The full size UM combat grips feel perfect in my hand and help soak up recoil. I don't apologize for them over wood.

If I can ever get an order in with Craig Spegel, I will order a set of smooth extended grips for the Model 13, and a set of extended square butt J Frame grips for the new 3" Jovino Model 60 as I don't think that UM made the J Frame extended combat grip in square butt. I believe that the rubber UM boot and combat grips came from his designs.
