Unanimously Absurd and Impractical

Bad idea.

What occurs during gang or even police shootouts shouldn't have much influence on your thinking since they have so little in common with your needs as a law abiding armed citizen.

Bad idea! I have a friend who loads #9 birdshot in his .44 special saying
shoot someone in the face and that stops them. I regularly tell him he is
looking to be sued by a blind person. He has even taught some classes
telling students if they don't want to kill someone use his method.
My thoughts on the subject if you have to fire your gun, put the person
down, if it's down for good, so be it.

See how 'blinding' someone and fighting that someone in court is going to go down well.
.

I imagine the financial liability would be more than if the assailant were killed (at least in this state). The OP would be a PI lawyer's dream.

"So, you INTENDED to blind the victim?"

I vote "absurd". If the possibility of killing someone gives the OP that much of the willies, he may want to reconsider carrying at all.

Short Version: For your particular concerns, get a Judge or Governor and use .410 shotgun shells instead.

Long Version: I read thru a lot of these posts and frankly I'm of the "absurd" opinion as well. Since there are a lot of reasons that have already been stated, let's just say that I agree with about 99% of them and just move on to "other options"...

If you are searching for a less-than-lethal option because you are concerned about possible injuries to others when throwing lead, then I would suggest a pistol that would take .410 shotgun shells as an alternative. Here are my reasons:
1. They CAN be less-than-lethal;
2. Depending on the .410 round you choose you can still do quite a bit of non-lethal damage, where almost all of the choices will do more than a wax-filled blank. If you are pulling a weapon then your objective is to END the confrontation as quickly as possible and to heck with being polite;
3. A .410 shotgun round from a pistol can have very limited range and potential for ancillary injury to other persons. It drops off significantly with distance - much more so than any bullet;
4. You may bear less liability using a factory round in a self-defense situation as compared to using one you produce yourself;
5. And finally, if you want to load a bullet in your pistol - you certainly can, but at least you have the option.

This is absolutely absurd. Drawing and firing blank rounds or whatever you want to call them is still going to be seen as the use of deadly force. You intention does not matter. Also if you have the time and ability to safely retreat to cover, continue retreating. The best gunfight you as a non-LEO civilian can be involved in is the one that never happened. The space between your ears is your best weapon.

Secondly one google search will find you a ton of cases where people firing live defensive ammunition failed to stop an attacker with one or multiple shots. And you're going to trust your life to wax bullets and MAYBE blinding or stunning someone for a couple of seconds? This is an absurd practice that will land the user in some serious legal hot water or, worst case, dead. A firearm is a deadly instrument. Period. Carry a less than lethal option like OC spray if you want to have that option in a situation. I highly recommend it.

Please dear god do not do this.

Using a blank in self defense will get you killed. I shot an armed robber four times during a gun fight and had to use a blackjack before I could get him cuffed. He died in the hospital two days later but had plenty of fight in him after being shot w/my thirty-eight.

My god. Glad to hear you're still with us after that encounter. Just goes to show you NEVER to underestimate an assailant when the adrenaline is flowing.

Consider that your attacker may be a feral dog pack, or a ?? moose or something.

I agree with what everyone has said regarding this as a very bad idea.

Since the OP is an Army veteran I will give him credit for over thinking created by an unusual situation. Let it go.....!

A firearm, particularly a self defense firearm, is designed for a particular purpose. In order to perform as designed it needs to be properly loaded with proper ammunition. Loading it with anything less is like putting diesel fuel into your gasoline powered motor vehicle and hoping it will work, anyway.

It was an imaginative post but I KNOW that the Army taught you better!

This is almost is bad an idea as using blanks. The words gun and less lethal do not belong in the same sentence together.

Especially not when you're referring to as poor a quality gun as a Taurus

Stepping forward and swearing into the Army during a hot war cleared my head of any such thoughts. You bet I can!

@Smoke - In all reality I completely agree with you - but I don't get to decide for the original poster what he thinks is important, or what circumstances or conditions concern him the most. I just get to join the conversation and go along for the ride.

One of my cardinal rules for shooting sports is that you must respect what a firearm is - and what it is is a deadly weapon. If you think of it as anything else (like a toy, or a collectible, or a work of art, or even a piece of trash) then you are not giving it the respect required to keep yourself and others safe. I didn't get a voice in creating the Governor or the Judge, but there they are regardless. I would never own either, but that doesn't make them less valuable to someone else.

I hope that the OP works his way thru this, because it sounds like a bigger issue than just choosing which pistol or which round to use.

Cheers!

The dumbest post ever!

Just when I was considering posting about people continually 'over thinking' things, this appears! :D

Seriously..I am amazed. Singularly, very likely the dumbest post ever in a gun forum.

I would highly suggest that the OP seek out some quality training and devote a little bit of time researching force-on-force engagements. It sounds to me like they are young and have been filled with nonsense.

Oh. ABSURD!!

Totally absurd.

Ranks eight up there with the guy I met in the academy that said when he got out on the street, he was going to carry his service revolver with the firing pin removed, and carry a loaded snub under his jacket (anticipating a gun grab - talk about planning to fail). Believe it or not he was successfully "reeducated" and made it to retirement, though always a bit strange.

Where did you hit him, and what kind of ammo were you using?
