Underlug

I have a two S&W .38 specials (640 1-7/8" & 60-4 3") Am I correct in saying that the top one (in the attached photo) has a full underlug and the bottom a half underlug?

I'm not sure about the correct English term, but I 'd say full underlug and NO underlug (unshrouded): exposed ejector rod, and anterior lock only.

Agreed. Top one has a full underlug, bottom one has no underlug.

I think a 2.5" model 19/66 would be an example of a half (or partial) underlug.

I think S&W literature will sometimes refer to the bottom style as a "tradition barrel."

A pencil barrel is a traditional barrel that's not a heavy barrel and thinner still than a standard barrel.
