Recently traded for a Unertl 20X Target Scope. It's in beautiful condition, complete with recoil spring, end caps. Fine cross hairs., etc. No flaws in the finish.

The serial number is 21571. Is there anyway of pinpointing the manufacture date or getting a close approximation of that date? I want to put it on one of my .22 cal target rifles but I also want
the scope and rifle to be period correct to each other.

Any help much appreciated.

Regards,
Dick

Maybe there is a Unertl forum; I'd check there first. There used to be some dealers/traders that specialized in online sales. That would be another source.

I've had many of these scopes over many years, but am down to three, none of which are currently mounted. A lot of these scopes changed little if any over decades. This was pretty much a family business that closed probably in the 1990s. When I sent a scope in for repair or modification, a year of manufacture would be provided if you asked. I don't know if any of the family is still around or who would have records.

A different Unertl company was started up about thirty years ago. I visited their booth at the SHOT Show whatever year that was. I don't think they were around long. There are likely folks on this forum that know a lot more about Unertl than I do. Maybe they can help.

Excellent scopes with very repeatable adjustments. A bit fragile, but take care of them and they will last.

While of little help, the three scopes I have left all have serial numbers in the high 70,000 range and I doubt there were many built after that. I bought these about thirty-five years ago. A scope in the 21,000 range may have been built from the 1940s to the 1960s. Just a guess and I may be off a mile.
