Unique 586?

586-3, matte blue, 4", round butt. A friend of mine called me today asking if I know anything about this version as he was offered one to buy, $600 asking price, 2 sets of grips (Pach Compac & S&W service), no box, 2 boxes of ammo, he describes it as excellent-very lightly used. I know there had been one for sale here on the forum, the seller hasn't responded to my queries. I can't seem to find it in the SCSW (am I missing it there?).

Can anyone shed light on this version, is it something special?

I believe they made around 2500 of these so it's not rare and the round butt is a matter of personal opinion. It's fairly easy to turn a SB into a RB or so I'm told. However, this is usually done on stainless guns for obvious reasons (finish).

Without the box its a shooter anyway. Personally I would rather have the luster blue.

What I'm saying is that the price with the ammo and grips is not out of line but I would not buy it as an investment. In fact, I think it would sell slower than a shiney SB 586.

I would offer $500 and settle around $550. It might look pretty cool with a set of RB combats

Thank you very much, I will pass on the suggestion on what to offer. Is this version in the SCSW? I personally only like the round butt on 3 & 2" barrel guns. If he gets it I know he plans on it being an occassional range gun but mostly used as a home protection gun.

Your assistance is one more example of the great folks on this board.

As Avery mentioned, shiney blue, is where it is at. Matte blue reminds me of the new no blue, black stuff. I do have a 28 no dash. It does not have a high gloss finish, but has enough to be beautiful to me.
At the right price, I would still buy it. $600 is way too high for me! I made a trade for a 586 no dash,4 incher. Have $450 into it. It is not a safe queen, or new, but you won't find 1 much nicer. Good luck. Bob

Avery nailed everything. If it was just for the gun, I would not pay more than 450.00 shipped for a mint one, there is not really a market for them and would rather have the luster blue version or nickel. A member on here just pulled his add because it was sitting there for 540 or best offer for a while. Like said there might have been only 2,500 made, but there is no collector value there or following which is needed, so prices are dirt cheap on those matt black versions.

So what's the story on these? Just a curiosity? If memory serves weren't the 4 & 6 inch -3 square butts? My friend is meeting the seller tomorrow to negotiate a deal, evidently the seller is motivated, selling off a few items.
