WHAT IS SERIAL NO. 5K24960 SIGNIFY?IT IS .22 CALIBER ,8 INCH BARREL,NEVER FIRED IN ORIGINAL BOX.. K 24 WERE 44 CALIBER??? WHAT IS THIS THING??. S&W ONLY TOLD ME IT WAS MFD. IN 1974
The serial# is assigned to the frame by S&W during production. It doesn't mean anything other than it's the frames serial#. The Model# of your revolver is stamped on the frame under the yoke. If you swing the cylinder out, look for MOD 17-3 stamped on the frame.
I've never heard of a K24 being associated with a .44 calibre. You may be thinking of a K-22 and a K-38. K-22 Masterpiece is the name S&W called your revolver before Model#'s were assigned (pre-1958ish). K-38 is the name S&W called the .38 special revolver that is virtually identical to your's and was the companion revolver to your's, again before Model#'s were assigned.
The serial number range, 5K6617-5K73962 was available in 1973 and used for K, or medium frame revolvers shipped in 1974. Your serial number suggests your 17-3 was shipped in the first half of 1974. The model of a revolver is independent of the serial number as all K-frame models shared the same serial number sequence (Models 14, 15, 17, 18, 19, etc.).
