Like many of us, I get a LOT of junk email or spam. In the past I was told to never use the "unsubscribe" feature that is included on just about every piece of spam email. The idea was that by using that link, you were telling the sender that there was a live person and it would just get you more spam.

Well, I did an experiment and unsubscribed from about 20 spammers. Most of them were from places I had purchased something from. As I unsubscribed, about 80% of them gave the the opportunity to select from a list of reasons why I was unsubscribing. If given the opportunity, I checked that they sent too much email.

That was about a week ago and I have not received a single piece of spam since then. Maybe it actually works as it should. Time will tell.

What happens when you "unsubscribe" depends upon who you are unsubscribing from. Most companies, at least reputable ones, just remove you from their mailing list. Less reputable ones will sell their email lists, but they do that whether you unsubscribe or not. The worst ones are the unsolicited messages that are done using the shotgun approach, where they email something mildly obnoxious to every conceivable email address (they don't care if the mail is deliverable or not) and hope that you will respond via unsubscribe, in which case they sell your email address as a "known working" address. These go straight to my spam folder.

There are two types of junk email.
The first type is real junk email,, that mail is "fishing" for you to unsubscribe.

The second type is like,,, Lowes, Macy's, Harbor Freight,, etc,,,.
The second type is the stuff you signed up for in the first place.
You can safely unsubscribe from the second type,,, no issues.

Most times when you are buying something on line or seeking information from a website, there is a little box with a checkmark in it that "agrees" for you to receive advertisement, etc. It normally is very small and in a location you may not notice it. Look for it, find it and un-check that box and you won't be automatically added to any automatic email solicitations.

Couldn't agree more GKC. I wonder what it was that triggered those emails?

I think they steal or are sold, your URL Id. Maybe from a website you visited.

I tried the unsubscribe from the phishers . Helped for awhile on my Yahoo account . Now I get an average of 200 per day. My other emails have very few.

I just mark it all as spam, let it go to the spam folder where it's deleted monthly. Never do I open suspicious e-mails.

Yahoo is about the worst mail site. I have had several accounts, and always got lots of spam. I finally deleted them all, and use Gmail exclusively. I don't care for Gmail, because I like to organize my mail into folders, and you can't do that with Gmail...but it's pretty secure. I still get some spam, but Gmail is very effective at isolating it, and it rarely gets past my spam folder, which I just dump every one in a while.

I did set up another Yahoo account, but I use it only as a recovery site, and never use it to send or receive any mail. So far, no spam in it.

I don't care for Gmail, because I like to organize my mail into folders, and you can't do that with Gmail...but it's pretty secure.

If you use Outlook, you can use Gmail and sort into folders. That's how I do it.

I have 5 self sorting "folders" in Gmail,,,
The self sorting folders work a lot like the spam folder,,,
Gmail just "learns" where to put the mail!

I can imagine something better than Gmail,, but, I can imagine being a billionaire also,,,

I am VERY happy with Gmail,,,

I don't do anything special or overthink it. I just delete those I don't use or know. Just like the paper junk mail that I toss in the trash without a second thought

They do unsubscribe me...

...but anything can trigger them to start sending it again. One girl told me that it would take several weeks to get unsubscribed. What do they have to do? Get my request peer reviewed???

I always give the reason that my email address changed.
