Last weekend at the Birmingham show, I stopped by Mr. S&W's (David Carroll) table with my buddy. As always, he had a very impressive table loaded with very fine guns. We spoke with David for a few minutes about .22 short Model 41's. He showed us one and we discussed it for a few minutes. As I was getting ready to leave, I asked him about a version of the 686 with the "sihouette" sight. I told him that I was interested in one and that I thought that they were available with a 6" barrel. He replied that he has only seen one and that it was a 6". Like me, he thought that was the only one with the adjustable front sight.

Later, on the last aisle (funny how that always happens), I spotted a nice 686 with an 8-3/8" barrel. My shooting buddy loves mine, so I pick it up to show it to him and, and lo and behold, it had the sihouette sight! He went from wanting it to gotta have it in nothing flat! He made a deal to buy it, and it arrived today! He texted me at lunchtime about it, so I stopped by his place on the way home from work to check it out.

Has anyone else ever seen a 686 with the sihouette sight? What barrel length was it? I think he got one of the better deals of the show.

I didn't get a new gun, but I did get a couple of pounds of powder and a correct set of grips for my transitional .38-44 Heavy Duty.

I have seen the 686 and 586 Silhouettes in 6 and 8 3/8 inch barrels. I have also seen a Model 29 8 3/8 inch Silhouette,

Unusual 686

I once owned a 686 with 6 inch barrel and the silhouette adjustable front sight for several years. Never shot it.

I once owned a 8 3/8 inch 586 with a shilhoutte front sight.

Years ago, I saw a 686 6" with the sihouette sight, and I've seen a bunch of Model 29's with the 10-5/8" barrel with them, but that's all.

I was hoping that the 8-3/8" 686 was a little on the uncommon side for my friend's sake. Even if not, it's a mighty fine revolver. Looks like you guys have seen more guns with these sights than I have.

As a matter of fact, I just bought a used 686-3 w/ silouhette sight last week off of Cabela's gun library. I was looking for a 686 and happened to come across that one. I had never seen the adjustable front sight before which made it ever more intriguing to me. See thread here:

Took it to the range on Sunday and had a ton of fun sighting it in a 5, 7, 10 and 15 yards. Went through 100 rounds of 38 special. Why more manufacturers don't make something similar is beyond me.

I read your thread. I think you got a great gun! That adjustable front sight is functional, useful, and not something you see everyday.

As soon as I can find a 686 6" with an adjustable front sight at a good price. I have a 4" and an 8-3/8", so I wanted my buddy to snag that one.
