Unusual Shield grip modification...

With the P365 being released I've been shooting and handling/dry firing my Shields a lot lately. So I felt like sharing a grip modification I tried.

First, I did a dual trigger guard under cut. Not so unusual...

The Salient Arms Shield was my reference of how little I can leave for the middle finger. I also did a cut for the off hand index.

Next thing was the grip size. I always felt it was too small for me. I could never get much of my off hand on it. The Pachmyr (sp?) grip was in consideration but the finger groove may not line up for me, especially with the trigger guard.

So I tried some friction tape to customize it to my grip... added more on the backstrap to try to correct the natural trigger finger placement.

It worked out pretty well. I bought a 40SW Shield slide.

What better way to test the grip with a notoriously unforgiving caliber?

With the 40 slide my Bill Drill groups with the 40 didn't really get worse and with an IMO decent time of 3.xx seconds

I had a extra Talon grip that I covered up the friction tape with. Easily reversible (and the Talon grip was custom cut to a P320 grip module previously) but haven't felt the need to remove it.

Only thing I'd like is stipple or a shelf for the off hand thumb as it always falls off-- Talon grip didn't do anything but didn't bother removing it. It'll do for now.

All that matters is if you like it. Personally I'll leave mine as is as I like the feel and can shoot it well.

Does undercutting the trigger guard really help?

Beaver tail and trigger guard is subjective. For example for gf's Shield it often looks like the webbing of her hand isn't high up.

I CAN use the flush mag and have a decent grip and the undercut helped in that regard.

On the Glock it helped with the "Glock knuckle."

The original grip is only a finger gap and my off hand barely contacts the pistol. Now there's two (like w/ my 19) and it works out. It also helped prevent using "too much trigger finger" which has allowed me to be more consistent with it from a draw, during reloads, etc.

If it does not hang on concealment, and it feels go to you, and it has not impaired function, then have at it. I do not know how tight you have the tape on it, but over time, due to heat, perspiration, friction it can work its way lose, so check on it periodically. If you shoot it well, that is what is important. Good Job. Be Safe,

Hogue Handall is the simple and easy solution and works great for me. I have them on both my Shields.

If you think that the Handall is a loose fit, you haven’t tried to put one on. You need to heat it in order to make it pliable enough to stretch over the grip. Even then you have to fight it to get it over the gun grip. I suspect that getting it off would be equally as challenging.

Nice job. Make it like you want it. These poly guns have little re-sale value anyway. On my Shield, I was getting some abrasion from the mold line under the trigger guard, which you have under cut. I just sanded it smoother with some fine paper. But, the grips seemed too narrow, so I made some leather panels and beveled them for a good transition, then glued them on. The left side has a nice thumb hollow. Much better. Looks nice, too.

I do agree it's a bit thin, but what bothered me moreso was the trigger reach. Since it's a CCW for me I didn't want to thicken the grip too much, but it did anyway.

Since you had a second iteration, what glue did you use? Did it leave residue or permanent damage?

Regular contact cement from the can, spread thin. There did not appear to be damage when I peeled off the first set - the ones that resemble a 1911. Reapplying the glue for the second set just re-activated the stickiness. I think the second set looks rather like brown stained bone. They feel much more natural because they are beveled as well as distressed, with highs and lows. Plus, they closely follow the original grip outlines.

If you think it's unusual, you should see what I just did to my new 2.0 Compact. I ground off the bayonet lug under the chin. Much more to my liking, since I have no desire to add a "here I am, come and get me" beacon.
