UPDATE: 01/21/10

I have decided to name my rifle LEGACY. The complete project pretty much details how I have tried to live my life, raise our boys to live theirs and tutor and mentor those that have worked for me over the years. When you start something, do it right, take no shortcuts and finish it. My motto has always been a tough one to uphold, "ANYTHING LESS THAN PERFECTION IS UNACCEPTABLE" I know perfection is not always achievable but knowing you strived for it is what counts. This rifle is my final "LEGACY" for my family to remember. While not perfect, It's Damn close.

I want to thank each and everyone of you I really appreciate all of the comments and replies.

I started this project 01/03/09 and finished it 12/12/09.
This is the first Muzzle Loader I have ever tried to build from scratch.
The barrel is an antique 45 caliber that was never used, I cut it to 38".
The double set triggers and all of the Silver hardware are handmade.
I did not use the Butt plate or trigger assembly shown in the first picture
The lock is a Siler. I'm open for suggestions for a name for it?

Here is a link to a picture heavy photo essay of the complete project

You don't see too many left-handed flintlocks. You should be proud--it looks like excellent workmanship. What's the caliber? Have you fired it yet?

That is simply outstanding..

Your did a wonderful job, especially starting from scratch.

Steve,

Absolutely beautiful long gun. As far as a name, one will pop into your mind someday when you pick in up. Just off the top of my head: Martha, 1st First Lady of our country or Betsy for the lady that sewed our first flag... or "Old Glory". Hmm, I like that one best....

:) Folks this is what I call art!!! A real craftsman. I think
that you should call it "Betsy". I think that is what they
named them in the old days. Don

Wow that is absolutely beautiful!! You are a true craftsman!! That gun is priceless!!

Beautiful rifle. Congrats on the fine craftsmanship. You did it the hard way!
Barrel wedges instead of pins,,hand made DSTs, cast furniture, aqua fortis stain, stock from the plank, etc.
Beautiful inletting job on those parts...and a pinned trigger guard. Looks so much better than screws holding it in position I think.

I like the change of seasons in the background of the photo essay!

We need some test targets..:>}

Names are personal thing. One rifle I read of was named 'Death' by it's owner for the absolute effect it had on bear in his Appalachian hunting days. Might be a bit too soon for that type of moniker!
Whatever you settle on I'm sure it'll be fitting.

I'm impressed! That is a beautiful rifle. One has to be a persistent and patient person to do that kind of work.

Like others have said, I think the name is personal and will come in time after using it.

Fantastic rifle. Everybody I know who owns a flintlock has built their own, and they all look great.

WOW....

Words can not describe how impressed i am.

I absolutly love flintlocks, and your's is one of the finest i have seen so far.

Pretty amazing...!!!!

You have to be proud. Now, what's the plan for the gun goin' forward.... Think you'd have it out at a 'Vous real soon...
