I have a 2011 Mac, which I like a lot. I was hoping to hold onto it for a couple of more years, so I looked into upgrading it. I know the hard drive has a definite lifespan, and I was somewhat concerned about it just not working one day and me losing everything.

So I went with an upgrade kit from a company called OWC. Which includes a new 1TB SSD (I also upgraded my RAM). They have video's that walk you through the whole process. The hardest thing about the swap out is getting big hands into small areas. I have to say this computer is faster than the day I brought it home. Very happy with the results.

So If anybody is considering upgrading, going from a hard drive, to an SSD drive, will make a huge difference. Additionally If you have a MAC, I highly recommend OWC.

disclaimer: my computer tech skills are very limited.

Yes OWC has some good upgrade hardware options. Back in the day, before there were large enough SSD's for my storage needs, I attached one of their external SSD's to my MAC's lid with Velcro and ran it to the laptop via the Firewire port. It worked great as an operating system platform, leaving the much larger internal Hard Drive for storage.

Nice. Sounds like you are years ahead of me :D

I also bought one of their USB enclosures, which allowed me to format and transfer all my files over BEFORE I did the swap out. It also allows me to use my original hard drive for additional storage if I need it....with the understanding that since it's USB it will be slower.

I am also paranoid about losing data. My computer has a zillion business files that are irreplaceable.

To make my business safe I bought a USB remote hard drive with many terabytes of space. I backup the entire C drive every few months.

In the "olden days" I used to add stuff to upgrade until it reached the limit of the processor. Back then I paid $2,000 for an IBM AT, so the stuff wasn't cheap.

One year I had a motherboard failure which literally made the computer worthless. Its now at my hunting camp where all I can do is view pictures off the trail cams.

With today's low prices I prefer to just buy a new computer, when the newest gadgets and horsepower are much better than what I have.

Yeah the big question is it worth it to upgrade or just buy new?

Mac's are not cheap, I was able to double my storage, switch from a HDD to a SSD drive, have a portable HDD just for back up and triple my RAM for under $300. It also gave me the piece of mind of not wondering when this HDD was going to stop spinning. BTW WD Blue 9 years and still going strong, i'm impressed.

So for me the answer was to upgrade.

Your SSD purchase can useful into the foreseeable future, regardless of what happens to your current computer.

Enjoy the "new" computer. :)
