I'm a proud owner of a great shooting, super performing Model 811310 M&P10 Compliant firearm. I've owned the M&P now for about 3 years and haven't had any of the issues that some of the owners on here have experienced. After purchasing the M&P I outfitted it with dark earth MAGPUL CTR Carbine Stock, handguard, PMAGs and a Timney AR10 competition trigger #607. The weapon is topped off with the Nikon ProStaff scope and M-308 mount. I load my own ammo and use it primarily for hunting whitetail deer. I shoot consistent .5 groups at 100 yards without issue.

I do however have 2 issues with the M&P, follow-up shots and carry weight.

My questions are as follows:
1. The 811010 comes from the factory with the heavy barrel that's not threaded. My goal is to have the barrel threaded for a compensator. I think this will improve accuracy and follow-up shots. Is this possible?

2. I want to free float the barrel also. Has anyone on the site had any experience with free floating the heavy barrel on the 811310 compliant model?

FYI- For all the hand loaders out there I've had excellent results with Nosler brass, Hornady 150 gr SST bullets, WLR primers and 42.0 gr of IMR-4895 powder. Of all the loads I've tried this one offers the most accuracy without all the wear and tear. Prior to loading my own rounds I shot the Hornady Whitetail ammo with the 150 gr Interlock SP with excellent results as well.

Thanks in advance and happy shooting!

It depends on the muzzle brake. Some will have more noticeable effects on muzzle rise and/or recoil than others depending on the design and what you are more interested in it doing.

I don't know enough about the heavy barrel dimensions to venture any suggestions for you. I also don't remember reading about any limitations on selection because of it. If you are looking to get a hand guard that will cover the gas block, the gas block will need to be a low profile one. They do make shorter free float hand guards if you wish to avoid changing out the gas block.

The barrel is 18" and .750 diameter. I'm would like to free float it so yes I will need a low profile gas block. My biggest concern is in getting the barrel threaded. I was hoping to find someone that has experience with it in the forum here. I have found that it is always better to do your homework first. "Prior preparation prevents poor performance, measure twice, cut once!"

I checked all my firearms in addition to the m&p for fouling from using the WLR primers and found nothing. I use Nosler brass and check every load that I develop for pressure signs. The Hornady load book has an excellent chapter on gas pressure and the signs of over pressure that I'm very familiar with. I take very good care of my firearms and pay particular attention to this while formulating my loads for various caliburs. Thank you

Unless you are a machinist, I would look at having a gunsmith or machinist thread your barrel for you. While you are at it, you may want to look at getting the crown worked so it has a 11 degree cone to it. I can't remember sure sure but I think the crown on my standard barrel has a flat profile. An 11 degree crown is reputed to be more accurate, even with a muzzle device installed.

I had my compliant barrel chopped to 16.25" and threaded. Installed a saker trifecta brake on it. Mine was the camo hunting model. I swapped out the fixed stock for a bcm m4 buffer tube, noveske qd end plate and added a od ctr. I run a kit from heavybuffers.com in it for the spring and buffer.

I got mine lightly used with a troy low profile gas block installed and a 15" troy alpha handguard. Shoots great. Only minor complaint is that the handguard is an armalite pattern and the rails don't line up on top. I will eventually replace it with a slr solo lite 14" version

Primary Arms is running all the popular 308 handguards at 15% off right now!

Requires DPMS LOW profile!

I have come to prefer the non-threaded barrel end.
