There is a point of diminishing return with upgrading an inexpensive gun... but it varies by owner what you want to spend and how much you want to tinker. Talon grips are not that expensive, and if they make it a better pistol for the shooter, then its a good deal.
Think of how many revolver owners have tried various grips... wood, rubber, G10, etc.! At least we can't change the actual grips on the SD's.
The Glocks and M&Ps definitely allow a lot more ways to modify those pistols. I had an M&P a couple of years ago that cost around $350, but after doing a lot of Apex modifications and trying an aftermarket Wilson Combat barrel, I realized I had over $800 in it. And it didn't shoot that much better than the basic model. Could have bought a Sig or a CZ for that kind of money... and accuracy would not have been an issue.
But I had a lot of fun, and learned a lot, doing the mods and trying to improve the way it shot. (Note: most buyers are not thrilled by home gunsmithing modifications on the used pistols they are thinking about buying). I've never read anything definitive on the M&P9s to tell me whether their lack of accuracy comes from the way the barrel is fit, the barrels themselves (they changed the twist rate around 2012), or whether the problem comes a timing issue related to the locking/unlocking sequence of the action. I've read all of those explanations on the Forums. In any case, I could never wring that final bit of accuracy out of my M&P9's. For me, the SD9 works just fine, at a much lower cost. The only mod I am running right now is the after-market take-down plate.
How much are those Talon grips?
