PRC, I also seem to be a bit of a magnet. Part of this is because I make eye contact with them when I'm being aware of what's around me and seeing what they're about. I suspect that might be what's drawing them to you - you sound as if you're pretty aware of your situation.
You should consider holding up a hand ("Stop!") as they approach and say, "Sorry, bro. Not today." That should keep them at a distance that feels safe.
I feel that I'm fortunate to be situated where I am, and tend to share if I have small amounts of cash that I'm not needing at the time. I sometimes worry that something dangerous might result, and I'm glad that I have these worries because they keep me from letting my guard down too much.
FWIW, most fellas who know that you're aware and approach anyway aren't looking to do you harm, they're looking to beg. The ones looking to do harm are the ones who veer away when you meet and hold their eyes.
