In 2001 I retired from the Coast Guard after 4 years in the Navy and 26 years in the Coast Guard - all active duty. After trying to work in the private sector I was laid off after 13 months as a Logistics Analyst and Director of the Logistics Products Division of a small Engineering Consulting Firm.

Hungry, with a wife to feed and an ex-wife to send monthly payments to - I was hired by US Customs and Border Protection in 2/2004 as a CBP Officer. Some of the more Senior Inspectors (when Senior Inspector was an actual position - earned with experience, tested knowledge, and seniority) used to tell us about the "Good Old Days". One position, done away with, was the Customs Patrol Officer (USCPO). They patrolled the area around the Ports of Entry (Airports, Seaports, and Land Border Crossings) along with Border Patrol. When the original "Sky Marshal" Program was cancelled many of the Sky Marshals became USCPOS or Agents. Eventually the USCPO function was dissolved.

There were (supposedly) 813 Model 19-4 (information found elsewhere on these forums) Blue, 4" revolvers, with smooth Goncalvo Alves smooth target stocks, and marked on the right side plate with a Customs Patrol Officer's Badge and the barrel roll marked 1852 - 1978 U. S. Customs Patrol. I bought one yesterday; its been fired a little and there is a turn line, but other then that I have it, the original wood display box, and the un-engraved brass plate for the top of the box. I think I paid a fair price for it; I'll probably shoot it once (6 rounds .38 Special, 6 rounds .357 Magnum, clean and oil it well, and put it on the "shelf" with my
revolvers. My pictures don't really do it justice; but here it is:

I have one as well and will be interested in any additional information that can be provided!

That is a U.S. Customs Patrol Commemorative for sure. They were commissioned I believe in late 1978 or early 1979. I came into the Customs Patrol in early 1980. I was bummed that I had missed getting one these.

I served in the Patrol until 1986 when I took a position in the Albuquerque Air Unit. It was there where I met a U.S. Customs Special Agent who's brother was a gun dealer, and had two of them. I immediately purchased mine, and it now resides in my safe next to my U.S. Customs Special Agent Colt 1911 commemorative pistol.

The Patrol was phased out in late 1988, and all the Patrol officers were made Special Agents or Air/Marine Officers.

Great find, they have been very scarce on the market. I personally haven't seen one for sale in about 3-4 years now.

and I didn't find it...

A friend of mine was walking around a gun show last Sunday and met the guy who was walking around with. Jerry said he knew someone who might be interested in it...me! It was touted as "unfired" but with a few grains of unburned powder in the barrel...well you know the story!

From what I've learned from (this forum) is that there were only about 813 of them made.

Here's my example U S Customs which I just retrieved from the safe. As you can see; the metal plaque is still in the envelope and was never mounted on the box. I purchase this example with a grouping of guns several years ago so it was never priced separately.Any estimate on it's current value?

The last one I saw for sale went for $1,000 about a year ago.

Thanks for the memory. I was a 1971 Sky Marshal and later an SCPO (Supervisory Customs Patrol Officer). I couldn't afford the commorative when they came out. Nice to see one. Best, Joe

I have one of these in its original display case that I really don't need. How do I go about getting rid of it? Perhaps trading it for a couple more practical handguns?

You could offer it for sale on the forum here, but I cannot imagine a more practical handgun.
