This happened near (within approximately 15 miles) where I used to live. I have driven Highway 82 between Indianola & Greenwood countless times. I think I read where it crashed near Highway 82, but not sure whether it crashed north of south of the highway. I just heard on the radio that there were 15 Marines and 1 Sailor on board. Like Rule 3 said, very, very tragic.

Six of the Marines and the Navy Corpsman were Special Operators that belonged to the 2nd Marine Raider Battalion out of Camp Lejeune. They were on a pre-deployment training exercise prior to deploying to the Middle East.

When you put on that uniform, you sign a blank check for your life. That applies to any member of the Armed Forces, combat or not. May they rest in peace, they have been relieved.

From what I read this morning, apparently the aircraft was spinning when it went down and one engine was on fire. One engine on fire isn't going to send a C130 out of control, but collateral damage to the flight controls certainly might. Very sad, regardless of the cause.

Sad news indeed. My thoughts & prayers go out to those service members, as well as to their families, friends, and coworkers.

Tim

A tragedy for sure.
The C-130 is one of the safest and most reliable aircraft ever built.
Very interested to hear what caused this catastrophe .
