using a wet rock

question,i found my dad's old wet rocks the other day. i have forgotten,do you sharpen your knife in a clockwise motion or a counter clockwise motion.any suggestions would be helpful.thanks..........

thanks for the spelling,the last time i remember discussing it was when i was 10.....
 
That's ok - when I was little, I called it a spit stone because that's how dad used it.
 
Stones

Spit, water, motor oil or whatever.

You need something on any old stone to carry away the residue. I prefer mineral oil.

Think like you are trying to shave a paper thin layer off the stone, by pushing the blade away from you, with the cutting edge going first and away from you. Guess at something like 25 degrees for the edge.
 
Anything less than a Lansky and I'm helpless in the sharpening department.
 
I've found that Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) makes the best lube for sharpening. Just the right viscosity and it won't gum up your stone like oil will.
