Does anyone know what type of finish that S&W uses on the wood service grips of their J, K, & L revolvers? I've been using Hoppes Elite gun cleaner on all my revolvers (SS finishes as well as blued finishes) and I've just read that Hoppes Elite gun solvent will remove oil based stock finishes. The solvent does unavoidably get on the grips but so far the grips seem unaffected. However, if they do have an oil based finish maybe I shouldn't push my luck. I'll appreciate some comments.

I remove the grips every time I clean the gun. It takes about 10 seconds and then I have no worries. Also keeps the grips from getting dinged up in the process. I remove the cylinders also - again one screw and about 10 seconds of time. I can clean the cylinders faster and better with less damage when they are out of the frame. Grip removal also allows for cleaning and rust prevention under where the grips sit.

chief38 nailed it!

I follow the same steps that he does. Removing the grips protects them from dings, handling marks, etc My grips come off first. Then they receive a light coat of Renaissance Wax followed by light buffing with a soft cotton cloth (new tee shirt). This also allows for cleaning underneath the grips. If you have a nickel firearm (not sure about stainless), apply Renaissance Wax under the grips where they contact the metal to avoid pitting.

The replies are spot on. You should always remove the grips when cleaning. Too many grips have oil stains especially on the inside. Also I have seen the grip frame rust from moisture that got under the grips. I even had a stainless model 60 that the grip frame rusted.
