In addition to communicating with the local Air Traffic Control facility, all aircraft in the Persian Gulf AOR are required to give the Iranian Air Defense Radar (military) a ten minute 'heads up' if they will be transiting Iranian airspace.

This is a common procedure for commercial aircraft and involves giving them your call sign, transponder code, type aircraft, and points of origin and destination.

Recently overheard was this conversation on the VHF Guard (emergency) frequency 121.5 MHz while flying from Europe to Dubai . It's too good not to pass along.

The conversation went like this...

Iranian Air Defense Radar: 'Unknown aircraft you are in Iranian airspace. Identify yourself.'

Aircraft: 'This is a United States aircraft. I am in Iraqi airspace.'

Air Defense Radar: 'You are in Iranian airspace. If you do not depart our airspace we will launch interceptor aircraft!'

Aircraft: 'This is a United States Marine Corps FA-18 fighter. Send 'em up, I'll wait!'

Air Defense Radar: (no response ... total silence)

Does anyone know what fighters the Iranians have these days? They probably haven't the parts and expertise to run the F-14's that we gave the Shah, before he was deposed by Khomeni, as Jimmy Carter sat by, seemingly approving of the change.

They had a lot of F4s but when we quit selling them spare parts and technical assistance they couldn't maintain them well enough to fly them.

I thought that with their oil money, they were able to buy military jets from France and or the former USSR. If nothing else, they got some from Saddam during the first Gulf War, when he sent them to Iran to keep them from getting destroyed. Whether any of those non-US jets are airworthy or not I don't know.

This has made the rounds a few times. I truly hope that it really happened. I also hope no one starts "Snoping" this. I don't want to know if it was made up. It's too good!

I remember sending this to a whole bunch of people when I first saw it a while back. Pass it on! It's good for morale. GO USA!!!

I agree that I don't want to know if it's made up or not... even more so, I don't care. IMHO, it could happen so that's good enough for me!!
