Uspsa and gear needed

Other than the obvious what all gear would I need to sett shooting uspsa.
The only firearm I have now is a shield which I am sure will not work well. So I am going to try and look for a full frame 9mm M&P are there 5 mags needed and what type of holster and so on
Any help will be greatly appriciated

First thing I suggest is read the rulebook. There are different divisions in USPSA, and each has its own equipment rules: Single stack for 1911s, Revolver Division, Production, Limited, etc. Even the holster specs are different in different divisions.

To take Production Division as an example, you need a pistol on the USPSA approved Production list, a strong side holster that covers the trigger, and mag holders that fit behind midline. The equipment is fairly similar to IDPA/SSP.

I'd suggest taking your shield to an IDPA club match, where it is in BUG Division. Particularly if you have never shot any action pistol matches, IDPA is a more beginner-friendly place to start.

In addition to all of that, if you can go to a local match and visit with the competitors....they were all a first time shooter and are usualy quite willing to lend a hand.

A full sized 9mm M&P with 4-5 magazines would be a great choice in Production which is usually the largest class.

Most will use some form of a kydex holster that covers the trigger guard, a couple of kydex mag carriers, a sturdy belt to hold it all, the standard eye and ear protection, a range bag to carry it all in and about 150 rounds of ammo per match.

Most clubs will hold a new shooter orientation prior to the match so be sure to attend that if it is held.

USPSA is very specific about safety and gun handling so DO read the rule book in advance which will help you greatly.

Thanks fellas.
I have looked into IDEA but there are no clubs around me that host them. The one that is fairly close is uspsa that was the main reason for me asking about uspsa.
I have shot competition shoots before but was a totally different type (cowboy action ) but would much rather stay with more modern guns at this point

As I am an active competitor in both USPSA and SASS, they offer different things and yet have some similarities.....They both have a written stage, USPSA allows you to shoot on the move, SASS doesn't.

There are classifiers in USPSA that will measure your ability (D,C,B,A, Master, Grand Master etc) where SASS has no skill measurement stages.

USPSA stages are often a shoot them as you seem them...you might see them differently than I do and follow a different course of action.

SASS is very specific in most stages as to how they are shot....once in a while you will get a shooters choice stage, but they are sort of rare.

As you know SASS shooters get to shoot handgun, shotgun and rifle...USPSA shooters call that 3 gun....Both disciplines are a lot of fun!

Both are games of speed and accuracy! I am not very speedy, but I AM very accurate!

SASS was a fun sport to shoot bit the amount of guns is a little more than I want to do now
I wish there was a club around that did IDEA but it's uspsa and steel matches is all we have fairly close and the uspsa is on Sundays so they are easier for me to make

I'd recommend visiting a USPSA match and observing. Many times that will help you decide which division you want to compete in. There is a bit of difference in what equipment works best for each division, and choosing one and buying the gear and then deciding to move to another division can get expensive (voice of experience speaking here). In USPSA you have a wide range of options for equipment. I normally recommend that new shooters who already have a full sized pistol (9mm or larger) shoot limited. The reason is that there is no magazine capacity limit (except in certain states) and the shooter can load his stock magazines to full capacity (15 or 17) and not have to buy a bunch of mag pouches right off the bat (mag pouches cost as much as magazines). 3 fully loaded magazines will get you through any stage. If you shoot production with a 10 round limit, you will need a minimum of 4, ideally 5. You won't have any chance of winning in Limited (but then as a new shooter, realistically, you don't have much of a chance in any division). Gear can get expensive, and competitive shooters are always trying to get the latest and best gear, so most of us have a drawer or closed full of unused (or used once) gear. Good luck, have fun.

If you are serious about competition, you will need to look more seriously about a full size handgun. Visit the competitions, speak to the competitors, and see what guns they favor. I'd look at the "stock" division, which basically allows you to compete with an out of the box gun, rather than several custom add-on's. There are several types of handguns popular and covers quite a large range of types, 1911, double action, striker fired, etc.
