Don't expect any better in other states that sell non-resident. OK is backed up that much, and we DON'T sell non-resident CCL.

Here in my county in PA, it's still.... walk in to the Sheriff's office, fill out paper work, wait for them to do their paper work / call in background check, pay $25 and leave within 10 minutes with your permit.

I know,it took me 2 weeks from time I mailed to Centre County to get my Non-Resident PA permit.Just wish they were all that easy.

I'm also in the wait period...My understanding is they are @ a 90 day backlog from the time they cash your $65.25 (that makes my special day 9-11).

Nice surprise today...Permit arrived!

71 days after they charged my card, it was in the mail today...Utah CCW permit. Very nice feeling!

How about for Utah renewals?

Anybody know how long renewals take? Or how about how far in advance can one apply for a renewal?

Renewals are quick...Utah sends out notices 45 days before expiration or you can download the renewal form on your own from the BCI website. No waiting on fingerprints.

My Utah application has been in the mail to them 5 or 6 weeks now. Already have FL but a guy was here in town giving the class so.......what the heck.

I've noticed that some states like Pa. where you don't have to take any safety courses, range time, etc. walk in get your license and your own your way and start carrying...sounds good but that's why other states won't honor your permit and you have to purchase out of state permits because you don't have to go through training to demonstrate your ability to handle your weapon. I wish all states would get together, agree on what type of training to have and then all states honor each others permits. Life would be much easier.

I think the Utah course is too easy. While the classwork part was good, we aren't required to do any actual live firing. We had to show the instructor we knew how to handle the guns, both semi-autos and revolvers, but I think live firing on a range would weed out some who may not be "ready" yet.

I can't believe that the state makes any money on issuing them, given the manpower and time it takes them to do the background checks and process the paperwork. I'm really quite surprised they sell them to non-residents - but I don't have anything against y'all who are making use of this service.

The class I took went above & beyond...full 8 hours w\ qualifications to Ohio's standard plus we did some defensive handgun drills w\ moving (in & out) targets (lights out w\ flashing lights & sirens blasting)...Then my wife took @ 3 hour class @ a retail sporting goods store w\ absolutely no hands on drills. It is our right, you know.

Passing a test to exercise a right

Since we are having to buy a Government license to exercise a Constitutional Right, there is great danger in requiring demonstration of shooting ability. Would you want to be required to take and pass ALL of the police course, including physical conditioning, to carry a gun? Neither would I.

Having taught both the UT course and other state courses that DO require firing, I think UT has it right. Actual pistol training courses, like the NRA's, sould be available and strongly encouraged, but not state mandated. In the OK carry course, the students get all wrapped around the axle worrying about "passing the shooting part" and don't listen during the LAW portion, when they should really be paying attention.

Some have the illusion that the firing check in a licensing course is actual defensive training; it is not. A good basic self-defense pistol course takes a couple of days, not a couple of hours, and should be taught separately. Everyone needs a good defensive pistol course unless previously trained, but NOT as part of the state-mandated course to get a license.

what's the deal with these utah permits anyway. i see them advertised in the syracuse paper all the time. they aren't valid for use in new york are they? i have my new york permit, and yes it took three months last year to get. anyway, what are the advantages? i saw it said something about being able to carry concealed, in other states, is that it? my permit is carry concealed, but also says to and from target only. this states permit laws are so fudged up it isn't funny anyhow. back to the point, what is the idea behind getting one of these utah permits?

You've just about answered your own question. NY is not the norm.
