Utah Soon To Be Constitution Carry State

The Utah Senate just passed a constitution carry bill (19-6) which will allow anyone 21 yrs or older who can legally own a handgun to conceal carry.

There was a compromise in the House where the firearm if semi-auto can not have a round in the chamber and for a revolver resting cylinder and next empty.

The bill if the Governor signs into law will not permit to carry in school. However, Utah conceal permit allows to carry concealed in school and loaded.

I already have a Utah Concealed permit so it will not change things for me but this law will send a message to Washington DC

I honestly believe that there are more important requirements for carrying a concealed weapon than just being "Old Enough".

And I already know about all the maniacs carrying hidden hammers, it's not the same.

So for a revolver, you'd have to cycle through two empty cylinders in order to get to your live round? Nice way to get someone killed.

Allowing someone to carry, but on an empty chamber may send a worse message. We don't trust you to carry you gun safely.

On one hand you think, it is better then nothing. But on the other, if it passes, it will be harder to fix later.

Welcome to Utah, more politics than brains. I'm afraid the only message this sends to DC is not a good one. We've also passed some "let's send a message to washington" bills in the last couple years that cost the taxpayer, me, money that I would have rather spent on my children's education.

Good news. It seems that in Kentucky, gun rights will be strengthened as well. There is already a bill that reduces the wait time and residency requirements for a CCDW. Currently, it takes about 3 months for the background check. The bill shortens the wait time to 2 months. Has passed Senate and House by overwhelming majority. Governor just has to sign.

It doesn't sound too practical to me. You make a six shooter a four shooter and loose two in a semi auto. The bad guys get a heads up when they hear you rack a slide and an audible click when the hammer falls on an empty chamber in the case of a revolver. I guess the idea of the law is to give the bad guy one more advantage. It seems we are accepting small morsels and are happy about it. What the heck do I know I live in NY!

If I was the governor, I'd circle that provision, veto the bill and send it back with a veto message asking if there was anyone in the House with an IQ above room temperature.

You only lose one round with a semi-auto. Rack the slide, and one is chambered. Unless the first round in the magazine is a dummy round, a trigger pull will go bang, not click.

Losing two in a semi-auto is not likely to happen unless the first round in the magazine is a blank or a dummy round.

I wonder where we will be with gun rights in a decade. St. Pats day, 2023. We will be down to allowing 1 live round in a gun, or no gun at all. Will everyone have a gun, but no ammunition? This is so silly, supposedly we have the best brains in the land deciding these laws.

Mister and Ms politician let me tell you something. Guns don't shoot themselves, it takes a person to pull the trigger. The laws you are passing are affecting me and citizens like me. We are a danger to no one. I have several CCW for many states, have any of the killers had a CCW? I think not. The laws you need to pass should be affecting the 'bad guys' and not the law abiding citizens and then give law enforcement the muscle to put these guys away.

I think we got off the track some time ago - generations ago, when it became more important to be politically correct and not offend anyone than it was to protect our Constitution.

There have been some poking fun on this forum regarding the less than ideal Constitutional Carry bill in Utah. If the bill passes it will require an empty chamber for semi autos or 2 cylinders empty in a revolver.

Yes, the bill is not perfect but it is a good start and if it passes Utah will be among just a select few states allowing Constitutional Carry.

The more important fact is the bill will have zero impact on the current Utah Conceal Permit law which is the only law in the entire nation which grants me the right to conceal my chambered Shield while volunteering at my daughter's public elementary school and pack at all public universities and colleges including sporting events.

Poke fun all you want about Utah but I am not aware of a more progressive state when it comes to upholding the second amendment.

You are correct I did say a lose of two in a semi, which would not be true. Having to rack the slide is the main issue but the revolver would go click before a bang. Either is not good but the cute rolleyes thing after your response is too much.
