In case the anniversary of this event goes unnoticed,
I thought you'd be interested in seeing the attached
photo. My wife and I were in Globe, AZ this last
weekend; I wanted to take some pictures of the first
house my parents and I lived in as a family, back in
1939. It's on a side street in that small mining
community. A good friend of ours, a native of the
Globe-Miami area, had pulled some strings to
identify the location of the house through old
voter registration records.

Across the street from that house is another old
house with an old concrete driveway. Chiseled in the
base of the driveway was an inscription commemorating
our victory over Japan, which had culminated in
Japan's surrender on Aug. 14, 1945 - now 70 years in
the past. That officially ended World War II.
Evidently the residents of that house wanted to
celebrate that event and commemorate it. I took a
photo of these markings from a bygone era in our
history. I thought I'd share it with you - we should
never forget the many sacrifices that made that event
so significant. We owe the veterans of WWII a debt
that can never be repaid.

Never forget.

VJ Day weekend is the busiest weekend of the summer here.

Mom has been gone almost 10 years and Pop about 7 months. My brother and I have the task of going through 75 years of saved memories from them both.

Today I read a letter from Mom, post marked on May 8, 1945. She related how all the church bells and sirens in town were ringing and going off and the president was to officially pronounce the war in Europe over later in the day. She wrote that she was crying with happiness. Pop had been overseas for about 32 months at this point.

Dad's letter to Mom, post marked May 8,1945 had the addition of VE added to the post mark by the APO on that day. He was aware that Hitler was dead, or so they were told and told Mom he thought the war would be over in a matter of days. He wrote the letter on May 6th or 7th. He was sorely sick of his wartime service and only wanted to be reunited with his wife and only son who was born shortly after he shipped overseas.

We have almost 3 years worth of letters from both of them that Mom had saved all these years in her hope chest. I will now become the caretaker of this small treasure of 70+ years old memories. I consider it a privilege to do so.
