It's ' Vehicle to Vehicle' proximity sensing being developed. Basically like GPS, or in the aviation world, TCAS or traffic- collision-avoidance-system. It senses other vehicles, etc. on the road and will take evasive action to prevent collisions.
Sounds good in theory but there goes the freedom of the road. " They'll" know where you are at all times and program your movements eventually.
I can hear the Grandkids now..." Grandpa, you used to be able to drive anywhere you wanted and turn on a whim and go somewhere different without an approved plan? Wow, those were wild times, huh?"
Granted, its all kind of theoretical now, but its scary thinking it will probably happen sometime in the future.

....Granted, its all kind of theoretical now, but its scary thinking it will probably happen sometime in the future.

Tractor trailers already have this technology (for a couple years now) - there is a small radar on the front of the front of the truck that senses traffic in front of it.

If the truck gets close enough to the vehicle ahead of it, the truck will activate the brakes all by itself.

From the sounds of it, it's the kinda technology that's needed now. So many people driving around, paying no attention whatsoever to what's going on around them. Too busy reading, texting, grooming and whatever else people do now instead of driving.
It's pathetic but since people are losing the ability to reason and drive like they have some kind of sense, they need technology to do it for them.

I hear you and it sounds good on the surface but mark my words, its the first step in controlling the traffic. Soon to follow will be 'road plans' where you'll have to schedule your trip and route. Don't want to sound alarmist but it happened with aviation. Yeah, you can still get in a plane and fly around without talking to anyone but that space is very limited and shrinking all the time. I would agree to an autonomous system strictly for collision avoidance, but we all know how the gov. works.
The people involved with this were talking about since they know you drive by a Starbucks most days, maybe Starbucks could target you for specials.. And so on and so on.
I value my freedom on the road and don't want anyone tracking me all the time, which will be a natural extension of this technology I'm afraid.

It is primarily to allow for safe texting. As long as the cars themselves do the driving the driver is free to text away all they like.

I'd feel safer letting the cars avoid each other than relying on the drivers I see on the road today. I'm not the driver I was 40 years ago but I'm a better driver than 70 to 80 percent of what I see around me. Having such a system in the car worries me though for the same reasons that have been stated. We now have a system which monitors where you are in case you need assistance. That tells me it's tracking your every move in the vehicle. 1984 was thirty years ago but it's still coming. Glad I won't be around to see it.

Obama is currently trying to force this on new vehicles. It's a technology where cars talk to each other.

Can you imagine what it will do? This will give those in power the ability to shut off your car at any time. This is why I will never own a vehicle with OnStar. If you have that in your car, even if you aren't paying for the service, they can remotely shut off your engine whenever they want.

'They' will place sensors on each on/off ramp of major highways so they know where you got on and got off and average speed between them.
'They' will place sensors in city/town streets and sell the info to businesses so they can inundate you with adds and offers and track who was in the area during a crime.
'They' will place random sensors along highways as speed traps and send you tickets in the mail because your own car said you were speeding.
'They' will allow police to send signals to your car to disable it.
'They' will require state inspection stations to check for the sensor if your car was originally equipped with one so don't even think about disabling it.
'They' will keep this data for years and use it against you whenever possible
'They' will provide the data of your driving habits to insurance companies so they can deny coverage or extort large premiums from you

Your emails, web browsing habits and phone records are already recorded.
Your healthcare files are now required to be digital and made available to HHS without a warrant (look it up).
Your location information is tracked and recorded using your cell phone and in-car navigation systems.
Your TV viewing habits are monitored by cable and satellite providers (if you connect the phone cord for satellite providers).
