hi,

lets introduce myself. my name is bart and i am from the netherlands. my grandfather past away and just before he past away i got a S&W 38 ctg from him. the sn is v21467. i gues its an early one. can anyone tell me something about this gun. i know nothing about guns. and i dont know how he got it. he always told me it was his milatary gun. but i dont believe it. because its says united states property.

who cab give me more info?

Yours was shipped about July 1942. It is a Victory model S&W made primarily for military use during WWII. You don't give much information regarding markings or barrel length. Pictures would be good. The caliber should be marked on the side of the barrel. Provide more information and you will get lots of history.

it has the S marking on the right plate. its marked with wb.
on the side of the barrel i can only find 38 s&w . ctg.

I believe the s is for a safety upgrade done to prevent accidental discharge if the gun was ever dropped on the hammer.

From your description, it was probably intended for service in the British Commonwealth, as the .38 S&W, also known as the .38/200, was the official British service revolver cartridge at that time. It should have a 5" (125mm) long barrel, as measured from the front face of the cylinder. It should also have a pair of smooth wooden grips. At that early date, it would not have had the internal hammer safety modification as that did not occur until late 1944.

Yes, but we know that some early revolvers were returned to the factory to have the modification done. These usually had an S stamped in front of the V on the bottom of the grip frame and a very small s stamped on the side plate near the rear-most side plate screw.

Burd2000 - is there an S in front of the V on the butt of your revolver?

The WB makes me wonder if this gun saw service in post-war Germany, during the occupation.
Where is it located on the gun? Are there any other markings you may not have told us about?

I dont realy know about the s. The logo is on the side of the gun. Iwill mesaure the barrel tomorrow. And the sign wb is on the butt
