Ran into one at a gun shop. 8 3/8 barrel and no 'M' stamp. Pretty sexy. Rubber grips. Almost perfect condition.

I'll take a stab. Excellent condition no box. I will say that it's my opinion that the 8 3/8" guns are not for everyone so pricing depends on finding the buyer. Personally if I were in the market for an excellent S&W pre-lock I would expect to pay $600 and it would go up from there depending on barrel length, dashes, condition, boxes and paperwork. I would be surprised if many at the range are interested in the long barreled Smith so perhaps $650? A motivated seller may get less and a motivated buyer may pay more but I think that would be a reasonably fair price in my area. Of course they aren't currently making an 8 3/8" 586 and if they ever do it won't be lockless.
If you want it then get out your wallet and be happy. You'll soon forget about the $$ but you'll enjoy that 586 for life. Let us know what you decide.

I agree, and will also add that the rubber grips detract from the value also. It is hard for us to judge without pictures. You did not mention what they are asking for it. Try to get the price down also. Good Luck! Bob
I bought a 586 no dash non m stamped 8 3/8 for 575$. I believe it was made in 84 my wife's and myselfs birth year. I wouldn't sell it for 800$. I can't go to any of the gun stores and replace it. That won't happen, I rarely see them for sale in my neck of the woods.

Count about $600 just for being a 586. The most valuable ones are in the 3" barrel range and those go for more. If you feel like you WANT the 8 3/4" Barrel, that's great. I find the 6" to be a tad nose heavy, but it grips well and shoots just fine. 6" guns are also more common to find used. Typically, the 8 3/4" is preferred for handgun hunters because it eeks the last bit of velocity out of a .357 round short of going to a Thompson Elite/TC or a rifle.

I'd agree with the $600-$675 range. Prices on pre-lock 586s go up as barrels get shorter. Except the 3", of course, which is the most expensive.

Without box/papers and with non-original grips I agree with the $600+/- estimates. However, I don't remember ever seeing an 8 3/8 586 for sale so there aren't all that many of them around at least where I shop. I might buy it, and be willing to pay a bit of a premium, just to have one. Good luck.

You guys are pretty much right on the money. Pun intended! It's priced at $699 and I think I'd offer 575 and go from there. What I didn't notice was if it had the adjustable front sight. That might make my offer go up. May give it another look this weekend if it's still there. I have a set of combats that would look great on it.
