Value help 64-1

Local shop has a 64-1 for sale and would like to get an opinion on the value. Looks to be in great shape with original grips.

They are asking 349 and I thought that was pretty good. They also had a 4in Rossi 357 for 300 but I really wanted a Smith....

$349 for 64 in great shape and original grips? Buy it. That's a fair deal. Corrections turn-in guns, all beat up with engravings, were going for $300 a few months ago.

Buy by brand and quality, not by what's cheapest!

The price is fair for what you describe. With original box, papers, and tools, maybe $400. Some will ask at least $500.

In the time that you took to ask, someone has probably bought that gun. If you CAREFULLY examined it and it doesn't have cylinder endshake or other issues, you'd better call the store and have them hold it while you drive there at the fastest legal speed.

I hope you get it and quit thinking of paying less and owning a Rossi.

You did not mention barrel length. If it's a 2" or 3" I would jump on it. Regardless, the M-64 is a great gun for shooting.

So I went back today (closed Sun and Mon) and it was still there. I get to pick it up on Friday. Looking forward to taking it to the range. Have a few rifles (generic) but this will be my first handgun and first Smith.

You made a good decision. The Model 64 is easily twice the gun that Rossi is. And you got it for a fair price. If there weren't so many other "needs" in front of it, a 4" 64 would be on my watch list and one in really good condition at that price wouldn't cause me to hesitate. There is a guy who has been bringing one to just about every gun show in southcentral Alaska for the past two or three years. It's pretty scratched up and he won't budge on his $425 price. It's easy to walk away. But if he repriced it to about $300, I think it would sell pretty quickly. My son would probably buy it . . .
