I picked up a 28 with a pinned 3-1/2" pinned 27 barrel. The original barrel was included as well. It's a shooter but I would like to put the original barrel back on it and wondered what the value of the 27 barrel would be. Any ideas?

I purchased a 3.5 inch 27 barrel off of eBay several years ago for $125.

Pictures would be helpful to see condition.
Also important is whether it has "lazy ampersand" or not
Price could be anywhere from $75 to $300

The front sight appears to have been filed down a little and the finish does not appear to be highly polished, but more of a satin blue. I'm guessing the entire revolver was reblued after the barrel swap. This would diminish any value of the 3 1/2 inch barrel. You might be just as well to leave that Model 28 as-is, especially if the finish on the Model 28 barrel does not match that of the frame of the revolver.

It does appear to be an older barrel but agree with stansdds, the finish does not look original and modified sight
I would put value below my low end estimate.
Here's a picture of unaltered barrel for your reference

Too Slow, any chance your in NJ ? My son picked up a model 27 with a model 28 barrel on it..who does this kind of stuff???
Many years ago, Model 28's were very common and cheap, Model 27's were always S&W's premium 357 Magnum revolver. If you had a Model 28 and wanted a different barrel length or maybe you wanted a 44 Special, it was not uncommon to take that Model 28 to a gunsmith who would perform such changes.

expense

I wouldn't bother with the expense of changing barrels ,use it as is or sell your revolver and find one with a 4 inch. Gunsmiths are not cheap.

I have a buddy who is very handy with work like this. Barrel is already swapped. A picture of the finished product with a set of VZ's. Range time Sunday.

The pin does not actually secure the barrel, but as long as there were no changes to the frame, then the original barrel will likely be correctly lined up and properly torqued if it is reinstalled.

I think that was the case as in it was a barrel swap with no other modifications. I am going to give it a test run this weekend. Hoping for success.
