Ran into a S&W Victory model with Proof marks, re-marked 38 S&W CTG barrel, a re-bored cylinder and a "Converted by (some company, can't recall) in London England.

Looks to be a WW2 made S&W sent to England.

Finish is about 80-85% and the gun seems mechanically fine.

1: Is it a shooter with standard pressure .38?

2: is is worth ~$400?

Sounds like a Cogswell & Harrison (of London) conversion. If the proofs are .38/1.15"/4Tons it was done over there (chamber reaming). Yes I would shoot light to service in it. And, see what .357 does out of a .361 bore.

$400? NO. Many of the butchered Victories, in addition to having bored-out chambers also had cut-back barrels and were refinished or plated. The C&H products were better done than most, if that's what it is. Likely no collector value at all, just what someone is willing to pay for a shooter. Depending on how good (or bad) the condition and workmanship is, maybe $150-300 range, and the top end of that range is generous.

Exactly this. Good call. Maybe I can work him down in price, but I need to look at it again. I think the front sight was re done too. Was that a Cogswell and Harrison mod also?

ETA: Still a 5" I think... Measuring time.

I have one of the Cogswell conversions. The very good ones have sleeved cylinders, not bored through. Easy to check. If just bored through, then an S&W 38 case will fit, if sleeved to 38 Spec, it will not. Mine also has the barrel cut to 4" and a long silver soldered ramp sight, in this case, a Parker Hale. A $40 crowning job made it into a very serviceable night stand gun. The barrel will also read 38 S&W Cartridge, not 38 Special. Dave_n
