Value of a Model 28-1

Doc44 is correct as he usually is. A letter is not going to solve your dilemma. Much more research is going to be necessary to pin it down. None of us have ever found a 28-1, yours would be the first, so imagine the odds. I hope your right though.

They are unicorns Robert. There are none known to exist, and any of us 28 fans would probably trade most anything to get one if it did. No dash serial numbers come within about 2000 Nframes of the first 28-2s. If they were ever made, it would have been very, very few. Kind of like the real nickel ones....

Thanks....

With the exception of 29-1s, -1 models are characterized by an extractor rod with a small relieved area behind the knurled tip (indicating it has a left hand thread), an L stamped on the rear surface of the cylinder (again, indicating a left hand thread), and MOD. XX-1 stamped in the yoke cut). The order to change the thread direction on the extractor rod and stem from right hand to left hand was issued on December 22, 1959, but it took over two years to use up old inventory and most -1s were shipped in 1962. The known serial number range for -1 N models is around S217000 to S230000. If the 28-1 reported is correct, it will definitely be outside the norm for -1 N-frame models.

Bill (DOC 44) asks an important question, how is the gun stamped exactly? If it is like the stamps below it is probably correct and worth at least $7500 depending on condition IMHO. At least that is what I would pay for it. If it is stamped MOD-28-1 however, the -1 has most probably been added by someone else. I would be careful of any gun stamped like this.
Keep us informed and I hope it does turn out to be correct, but an S199XXX serial number is a little early for the -1s.
Good luck!

Chuck

If the owner is available today (he is a neighbor) I will make all efforts to take photos and post them on the forum.

Welcome to the forum kresky! I keep checking back to see if this thread has been updated. I was really hoping to see S&W history unfold right here. I'll bet your pm box has been busy...

I have a 'Model 28' serial number S 181714 and there appears to be an 'H' on the rear of cylinder? Not sure about the 'H', but do believe the pistol to be 1957. To clarify......it does not have Model 28 stamped anywhere on it.....but does have Hiway Patrolman on barrel.

Perhaps OP has no web while away on a job, like a few members I know.

Perhaps..... use your imagination

The H is a fitter's mark. At the time, both the .357 Magnum and the Highway Patrolman were being produced. They used the same frame and cylinder, but got a very different finish. So, when an HP was being fitted, before it went for polishing and bluing, the cylinder was stamped with an H if it was meant for a Highway Patrolman. That way the polishing and finishing shop knew what degree of polishing and which style of blue to put on it.

And, yours is probably a late pre-28 HP. They started stamping model numbers some time in '57......

Model numbers were stamped in the yoke cut of N-frame revolvers at approximately serial number S184000 (early 1958).
